Wow is all I can say....what a great weekend. All fresh snow and fresh faces. It's hard to recognize friends from last year due to all the new suits. The voices & laughter are the same but all the gear is different. Couldn't have asked for better snow. Ran into Davey D today and he's my inspiration for this year...The Goal is simple Ski everyday and rip every run. I've skied a lot of places on this glorious earth of ours but I've yet to find anything as consistant as the mountains of BC. Specifically the interior of British Columbia and even more specifically, Big White Ski Resort. It really is named aptly when they called it Beautiful British Columbia! Now if only the cute girl from the UK would meet me for an icey cold bevvie, my world would be complete. I've been to about 17 "home" openers at Big White and I can honestly say that this one was the most incredible, fabulous, wonderful...did I say incredilbe yet? out of all of them...HANDS DOWN!

Opening Day at Big White

View a larger image on flickr.com

Yesterday was my favourite day of the year, opening day at my mountain Big White Ski Resort. For me the anticpation is as big as kid’s on Christmas Eve.  Lots of people up to join in the celebrations, I think the first riders in line at the Ridge Rocket were down there before 8am for the 8:45 opening, hard core!

Once the gates opened up and the first chair was loading there was a huge cheer from the crowd, really cool to feel the vibe of so many people as pumped to go skiing and riding as much as I was. It was pretty sweet as far as opening days go too. Blue bird skies, some fresh snow and the runs that were open were in great shape (nice job snow cat crew!). I saw quite a few people “exploring” some of the soft closures as well, naughty, naughty, no ducking rope lines. ;)

It won’t be long before we’re able to open up more of the mountain and there’s a bit of snow in the forecast for the beginning of the week so it could be sooner rather than later.

Anyway, if you made it up here for opening day I hope you had a blast. If you didn’t get up here that’s okay too because there’s 154 more awesome days of the  season to come!

See you on the mountain

This contest looks too good to be true- and the video is the funniest thing I have ever seen!  A whole winter of ski bumming with no work, no agenda- nothing.  Just skiing in the Kootenay Rockies on the Powder Highway.  I think the contest ends November 22, and the winner starts bumming in the new year.  I should just quite my job and go for it. Check out the video for more information!!

Paralympic heritage and tradition at Kimberley Alpine Resort

View a larger image on flickr.com

The Paralympic spirit is alive in the town of Kimberley, British Columbia.

It started as a dream to create the best Race Training Centre possible for Paralympic Athletes. Kimberley Alpine Resort has a long history of supporting Race Training that dates back to the 60’s and 70’s with athletes like Gerry Sorenson.

Gerry Sorensen Lenihan began skiing at the age of 10 in Kimberley, BC where she was born in 1958. Sorensen was named Canada’s “Top Female Athlete”, Sport B.C.’s “Top Senior”, and “Top Overall Athlete” in 1982. Named #1 in the world for the Downhill Event for the 1982-83 season. In 1984, she won her 4th World Cup victory in 3 years in the Downhill Course at Puy St. Vincent, France.

Gerry set the tone for athletic excellence and both Kimberley’s community and Kimberley Alpine Resort have not looked back.

Continuing with athletic excellence and dedication to the sport, Annie and Jerry Johnston started Canada’s first disabled skiing program and so began the tradition of Kimberley becoming the destination for disabled training and racing. Jerry assumed duties as the President and Executive Director in of the Canadian Association for Disabled Skiing (CADS) in 1976 and received Federal Charter as non-profit organization in 1979.

Now the City of Kimberley and Kimberley Alpine Resort have built an Alpine Training Run and continue their hard work and determination to build a Paralympic Training Centre

Ghanaian Olympic Skier "Snow Leopard" visits the year-round destination Whistler, BC this summer. He joins Tourism British Columbia Field Reporter Chris Wheeler and checks out Blackcomb Glacier and the PEAK 2 PEAK alpine experience! Kwame Nkrumah-Acheampong, a skier who has been nicknamed the snow leopard, will serve as Ghana's one-man ski team in the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, Canada. The Snow Leopard and his family had a great time in Whistler doing summer activities! Make sure to look for this guy ripping down the slopes in 2010 in his snow leopard spotted suit!

Ghana's Snow Leopard visits Whistler, BC and does a run down the Blackcomb Glacier with Tourism British Columbia Field Reporter Chris Wheeler. The Snow Leopard will be at the 2010 Winter Games as the sole member of the Ghanaian Olympic team. Considering it was a hot day in July, the Glacier skiing was great and the Snow Leopard was skiing fast! More field reports showing the Snow Leopard visiting the year round destination of Whistler coming soon!

My husband and I were lucky enough to travel to Whistler BC in late March 09 courtesy of the BC Tourist Board. We had heard great reports about the Ski resort and were excited to be visiting the site of the 2010 Winter Olympics. We were also looking forward to seeing Canada in the Winter, after a three weeks Summer road trip the previous year.

After a 10 hour flight and three hour transfer we arrived at our accomodation in the centre of Whistler, The Blackcomb Lodge and Spa. The Lodge was ideally placed in the Market Square and had helpful and friendly staff on hand. The room we had was spacious and comfortable with microwave and fridge.

The following day we collected our Ski equipment and headed to the lifts. There were at least three lifts taking Skiers, Boarders and foot passengers up either Whistler of Blackcomb Mountains. These lifts were always well staffed and excellently managed, we never had to stand in line for more than 5 minutes, a pleasant experience after Europe.

Once on the Piste we were faced by miles and miles of well posted and groomed slopes, that more than challenged our ability. The friendliness and discipline and overall civility of the people we came into contact with was most refreshing. There were also numerous safety staff on hand should anything go wrong.

Overall my opinion of Whistler BC Canada is that if you get the chance its a must. Fantastic scenary, Skiing and people and off course the Apres.

Secret Run on Ski Hill

View a larger image on flickr.com

If you look at a map of the ski runs on Mt Washington Alpine Resort, you won't find the Alpine Village run. However, throughout the original village weaves roads wide enough for a car during the summer, but only accessible by ski, board and snowboots during the winter.

I was fortunate enough to stay in one of the village chalets last week and found out there is nothing like skiing out every morning by weaving between chalets and snow-topped trees, making fresh tracks on perfect powder.

To find the trail, swoosh under the walkway between the Alpine Lodge and the Bradley Centre.

LATEST TIP 2009: Due to the epic snow conditions (see "perfect powder" above) the resort is staying open until late April this season!

Mt Washington, Japan

I don't know if there is a Mt. Washington in Japan or not, but I was happy to find out there was sushi on the ski hill when I hit the slopes last week! Mt. Washington Alpine Resort is Vancouver Island's "local" ski hill, located slightly north of the Comox Valley.

Sushi-Mon is located at the bottom of the Hawk chairlift, across the parking lot. One of those great places you wouldn't know was there unless you knew it was there.

Upon opening the door, the crisp snow-flaked filled air was replaced by wafting smells of curry-infused yummyness (is that a word?) Time to take off my jacket, loosen my boots and fill myself up with yam tempura rolls and miso soup. By the time my food arrived I wished I had ordered one of thier ramen noodle bowls, packed with enough veggies to soften any fall on the black diamond runs. (BEWARE: HUGE portions - my miso soup was served family style. Thankfully my family was there to share.)

Unfortunately, when I asked if one of the dishes we ordered was coming, I got a bit of a snappy remark - "yes, we're a bit busy, you know." Fair enough, they were busy, and as soon as the rush calmed down the staff did as well. I won't hold it against them and I will go back and of course, recommend the place to you.

Here's another tip for you - the Alpine Cafe serves up awesome chicken fingers!

I can't think of a better place to be on a sunny, warm day in March, in Vancouver, British Columbia.  (Grouse Mountain or any of the North Shore mountains for that matter!) Can you?
