Mount Begbie

Hello everyone! We had a fantastic time in Canada and want to tell everyone about a wonderful hike we had in the South Cariboo area. Mount Begbie is about a 10 minute hike just off hwy 97, south of 100 Mile. Once at the top, there is a brilliant, two story look-out tower that gives a panoramic view of the area. My husband brought up a map with us and we were able to point out the Marble Range, the Cariboo Mountains, MANY lakes and a few deer in the valley. We had our lunch on the picnic table right on the top of the mountain! What an experience--don’t forget your binoculars!

Along the 2.5 hour drive northwest of Fort Nelson my family and I saw some beautiful scenery. We wound our way up the Steamboat Mountain to see breath taking mountain ranges and the Muskwa River way below. Then we drove further to the highest lake along the Alaska Hwy. – Summit Lake. It was beautiful and cold with some snow on the mountain tops. There were tons of mountain sheep climbing around on cliffs right beside the road and they were on the road too licking salt. Finally we came down off of the high mountain roads to Toad River town, we saw some elk and moose down near the town. Past there we wound our way along a very twisty part of the highway, right beside the Racing River. About an hour after Toad River we were at Muncho Lake. We got to stop at the Double G services and eat lunch at the bakery. It was a nice friendly place with really good home cooked food .  .  . I ate way too much! Then we poked around the area. We hiked up some of the old washes from the flood of ‘74. It was really easy walking and we got to see the awing effects of Mother Nature. There was so much debris that had been washed down to the lake and the amount of rock that made up the wash was dumb founding. Then we drove just past the north end of the lake and on the left side of the road we saw there was sheep licks that we could walk too. There was a nice gravel parking lot with a great view of the mountains. We walked down the short trail to see the salt saturated ground that the animals in the area come to get salt. Unfortunately we didn’t get to see any wildlife but it was interesting to see none- the- less. After that we drove on to the Laird Hotsprings. The road was so hilly and I couldn’t believe that the mountains were still so beautiful. Slowly we wound our way down to cross the Laird River then up onto an old terrace on the other side. On our right was the Laird Hotsprings Lodge which we stayed the night at. And the hotsprings was on the left. So we walked over through the campsite and down the boardwalks over really swampy ground. After a 5 minute walk we could see the hotsprings. It was getting cool out so the warm water was very nice!! I am too much of a wimp so I stayed in the lowest pool because it was cool. But my family went into the upper pools because they were way warmer. It was too cool walking around the lowest pool and there was willow trees and others leaning in over the pool.

We just returned from our first trip to Vancouver with our 3 year old son and it was great.  Even though there were a couple of rainy days, it didn't spoil a thing.  We stayed in a very family friendly hotel  910 Beach. The price was right and the location was awesome.  It was so great to take the little water taxi across to Granville Island or take a walk up through downtown to Robson Street and Yaletown. We walked our feet off.  Our little boy LOVED the Kids Only Market at Granville Island. There was a great play gym in there which we visited on one of the rainy days. Science World and the Aquarium were also big hits.  We actually forgot to bring a stroller (!!!) but were directed to a wonderful rental service Wee Travel Baby Equipment Rentals who were able to get an amazing Bob Revolution stroller (I remember the name because I'm planning to buy one now!!) down to us in less than an hour.  I particulalry loved the shops in Yaletown and on west 4th- very funky street with the absolute best coffee I have ever tasted - 49th Parallel.  I'd return to Vancouver for the coffee and pastries at that place!!!  Food in Vancouver is wonderful. There is a full range of every style culture and budget.  If you're dining with a child, a great little spot is the Rocky Mountain Flatbread Company.  There's a little play area in the back for kids and on certain days the kids can go into the kitchen and make their own pizzas. All their ingredients are organic. We actually went there twice!  We didn't make it to Whistler this trip but hope to come back soon.  We love Vancouver!!

Driving the Trans-Canada: Kicking Horse Canyon Bridge

Located just East of Golden, the new Kicking Horse Canyon Park Bridge section of the Trans Canada Highway is open an it is amazing. For anyone who has been stuck behind a big rig inching it's way down that spiralling canyon before, you are in for a treat. The new section of highway reminds me of the Coquihalla, nice a wide with lots of room for trucks, RV's and slowpoke's alike.

One note: The view of the new bridge is only good from the rest area at the bottom of the hill on the West side, don't expect scenic photo op's from the bride deck while driving.

Savary Island

View a larger image on flickr.com

Our summer secret is beautiful Savary Island located north of Powell River, B.C. near Desolation Sound.  It is accessible by boat or by water taxi from Lund (45 minute drive north of Powell River).   You can bring your bicycles on the water taxi and cycle the island for a fabulous day trip.  One can also walk a short distance to discover the south beach.  At low tide, the south side of Savary boasts a spectacular long sandy beach that is the perfect place to dip into the ocean.  When the tide comes in, the ocean creeps over the long hot sand making swimming ideal!  The water is amazingly warm.  The south beach is a quiet paradise and easily accessible by boat.  It is a beautiful place to anchor in the daytime, and be only minutes away from a marina and supplies in Lund.  There are also protected anchorages nearby.  One can also enjoy the jaw dropping panoramic view from the South side of Savary overlooking Powell River, Harwood, Denman and Hornby Islands, and Vancouver Island in the distance.  Overhead, you will hear eagles and ravens and in the distance you will see countless sailboats and yachts cruising north into Desolation Sound.  Savary Island is the perfect destination for those who enjoy strolling long sandy beaches, panoramic views, beachcombing, swimming or simply relaxing.  Savary Island is a boaters paradise and the South beach is truly the best place to dip into the ocean!

Kamloops

A favourite drive of mine is from Kamloops to Barriere along the less travelled Westsyde Road where remnants of the disatrous forest fires of 2003 are very visible. The trees are blackened and skeletal but the rebirth of the land is clear. Grass is vibrant green wildflowers abound and new forest growth is already apparent.
