Harrison Hot Springs Resort and Spa

Except from my name on the room reading as ‘Natt Samyciawoo’ I have nothing negative to say about our one night stay at the resort.

We had booked a campsite in Harrison but due to torrential rain we abandoned that plan and went to the nicest hotel in town instead (a wise move if we say so ourselves!).

The room was small and a little cramped due to it being old. We had lots of baby stuff including a crib in the room which didn’t help matters.

This hotel has six pools. Yes, six!  They all get their hot water from the natural hot springs. They differ in temperature  which is great for the whole family.

Some are indoors, the others outside. Oh, did I mention the spa as well? My wife had a pedicure while my daughter(2years old) and I bounced on the bed and watched nature programs with ‘monkeys’ and other animals she recognized .

The next morning included a buffet breakfast and a return to the hot springs to relax and play.

The room was $159 per night which is not cheap but rather than being damp or even wet in our tent we feel it was well worth the expense.

The true test of an hotel like this is “does it feel like you have been away longer than one night?” and the answer is a definite YES.

Camping in Tete Jaune, BC

If you're looking for a place to lay down your head in the Robson Valley area and prefer smaller crowds than what can be found in most provincial parks - Tete Jaune Lodge is a great choice. Multiple different sleeping accommodations are available, including; tent and RV spots, tepees and cabins, as well as a backpacker’s hostel. The premises also include a superb restaurant called, The Riverside Cafe - aptly named as the lodge site sits directly alongside the Fraser River. Two weeks ago I stayed at the Tete Jaune Lodge while exploring the Valemount and Mt. Robson areas. It is perfectly placed between the two as well as nearby many great area hikes. Located right next door is the Stellar Descents Rafting company, and I highly suggest booking a trip while you're in the area.

In Bed with Victoria

Opting out of a kind post-wedding accommodation offer of pitching a tent on the bride's property, we decided to take advantage of an enticing online special at the Delta Ocean Pointe.  This turned out to be a brilliant move.

Having stayed at all the big name hotels downtown, I have to say - the Delta takes the cake.  Why? Unique little and big things done thoughtfully: provided sunscreen, mouthwash, binoculars, beautiful blue-bouncy tennis courts, being able to see the ENTIRE harbour from bed.  To wit: Houses of Parliament in all it's nighttime radiant glory, merry little ferries, whale-watching tours, Empress Hotel, mountains, hot seaplane action.

Also notable: ample opportunity to find free parking, relatively small scale without being creepy, pool area on harbour's edge *see photo*, and let's not forget - a timely note from the manager apologizing for the fire alarm in the night.

That was last weekend, and I'm already looking for a reason to go back!

After a 20 minute car ride off the beaten track from the heart of Quesnal we arrived at Pine Meadows Guest Ranch.   Here we were greeted with our host Wiley a hospitable, good humored lady she spend the rest of the afternoon showing us around and getting us acquainted with the variety of animals (llamas, cows, horses, sheep, pigs, chickens) she raises on her vast acreage.

The next day we awoke after a good nights’ sleep to the sounds of roosters crowing and the smell of a hearty breakfast sizzling on the grill. Wiley served up a 100 mile breakfast consisting of a variety of exotic, high quality meats from llama, lamb, pork, the finest green egg omelet in town and the most delicious locally crafted amaretto, Grand Maurier honey to grace our toast.

This past weekend, my husband and I stayed at the Granaries on Bear Mountain B&B, Dawson Creek, for our anniversary.  It was our third time there and it was fantastic as always.

They have turned old granary bins into a relaxing retreat.  There are three buildings: a round one for the dining room with french doors surrounding the one side; one rectangular one is the bathroom with a big, two-person jet tub; and the third is a cozy bedroom.  They are all connected by a stone courtyard.

And, the whole thing is perched on the edge of a pond that the owners built - but you would never know, it looks completely natural.  It's great for bird watching and adds to the relaxing feel.

Have I mentioned the food yet?  We booked a romantic 3-course dinner that featured sausage, cranberry, and apricot stuffed pork tenderloin - the breakfasts are out of this world!  I will have to hit the gym pretty hard this week.

They have also built trails and paths all over the property that you can take a leisurly stroll on and there is a giant chess set that works well with an afternoon glass of wine.

I can't wait to go again!  It is such a lovely retreat that I don't have to travel far from home to find.

Dunne-za Lodge is an absolutely beautiful vacation destination. Located on the North- West shore of Moberly Lake the lodge offers an amazing view of Moberly's sparkling water with plenty of opportunities to enjoy the lake and surrounding area. Relax by kayaking or canoeing on the serene, crystal water, or enjoy some nature trails; the West-Moberly area is well-known for its abundance of eagles, including the endangered Bald Eagle. Further enhance your time by staying in one of the lodge's teepees, which allow you to spend a night under the stars, and appreciate the silence of a night in the forest.

In addition to the teepees, Dunne-za Lodge has four cabins available for accomodation. These cabins are beautifully furnished, and include a kitchen area and shower. Accomodating 3 to 4 people, these cabins are perfect for a family vacation, with a separate bedroom for parents seeking peace and quiet.

The Dunne-za Lodge also provides a unique cultural experience for those interested in Dunne-za/Cree traditions. The lodge managers regularly smoke meat in traditional fashion, and is decorated with in traditional art work. In Febraury, the lodge holds a Winter Spirit Festival in cooperation with Chetwynd Spirit Week. This festival includes hand drumming, traditional hand games, snowshoeing, a soup and bannock concession, ice fishing and much more! This free festival is a favourite of the locals and open to visitors.

The Dunne-za Lodge is a fantastic resort, located in a beautiful area, with fabulous activites and accomodation.

Breakfast at Eagle Lodge

We got up fairly early the morning we left the Bella Coola area, but we did have breakfast at the Eagle Lodge, which is right outside town of Bella Coola.  We had a fantastic little breakfast of pancakes and eggs, which was absolutely appreciated after our long day touring the coast!

The Lodge itself was quite beautiful and well kept, complete with a little hot tub, cozy rooms and friendly hosts.  We had a wonderful chat with Rose, the owner, who had lots to tell us about all the great things to do in the area; from hikes to sights, we could have easily spent another week there with the new info she gave us!  Too bad... guess I'll just have to plan another trip!

Coast Mountain Lodge and Bella Coola

We rolled into Bella Coola a little exhausted from our trip down the 'big hill' and were relieved to settle into Coast Mountain Lodge, just outside of Bella Coola in a town called Hagensborg.  It was a beautiful little lodge, with easy access to all the activities in the area and a real modern design inside the log cabin exterior.  There was a little cafe bar inside the main office where you could get a nice specialty coffee - this was certainly not expected but was absolutely appreciated.

The lodge was a great homebase for our quick stay in the Bella Coola area and it was only a quick drive to the ocean, to hikes, to restaurants and other activities.  Definitely would love to go back and spend some more time and maybe take a wilderness tour offered by the hotel!

When we arrived at Escott Bay, I thought it would be just a fishing resort but it turned out to be an impressive cowboy experience (and fishing resort!).  We not only were treated to a great view of Anahim Lake, but we were delighted when Bill, the owner, demonstrated how to pack a pack horse for an overnight trail ride and shared with us his admiration and enthusiasm for the beautiful area around Escott Bay.

Clearwater Lake Lodge

View a larger image on flickr.com

We spent two nights at the Clearwater Lake Lodge, and I must say, it filled my expectations of a perfect, relaxing retreat!  The main lodge and suites are comfortable, cozy and complete with a giant, hand built fireplace.  The view from the lodge onto the lake is extraordinary and was coupled with various bird sightings throughout our stay.

The host, Gisela and Bernward, were absolutely delightful, and fed our group the most wonderful homecooked meals.  Sharing their experiences in the area, they had plenty of local lore and history which added a great value to our stay.  Berward was a great tour guide who led us on hikes and brought us to some of the many highlights in the area, such as Tatlayoko Lake.  We had great fun learning and exploring with him!  He even brought us out to see a nearby osprey nest.

Essentially, after having a great day exploring the Chilcotin, it is wonderful to come back to a place offering luxury, urban amenities with a flourish of great hospitality and company.
