Surrounding Fort St. John is part of the boreal forest, specifically known in British Columbia as the Boreal White and Black Spruce Zone. The Boreal White and Black Spruce Zone covers approximately 10% of British Columbia's land area, and the majority of the Alberta Plateau in northeast BC, from Fort St. John to the Yukon border. Climate and Weather While Fort St. John experiences cold northern winters, unlike many of the Canadian Prairie Provinces it does find reprieve from cold snaps when Chinook winds blow in across the Rocky Mountains from the west. Average summer temperatures range from 10.2˚C/50.4˚F to 20.2˚C/68.4˚F, and average te,peratures in the winter range from -18.4˚C/1˚F to -6˚C/21.2˚F .
