Fort St. John is located amongst the wide-open spaces, big skies, and gently carved river valleys of the Peace River Country, within a two-hour drive of the Rocky Mountains and the Peace Foothills.  The nearest rivers, great for boating, fishing, and other water activities, include the Peace, Beatton, Moberly and Pine Rivers.  The Peace River is 1,923 km/1,194.9mi long, and is part of the Arctic drainage, which eventually enters the Arctic Ocean through the Mackenzie basin. Sweeping fields provide beautiful summer drives in the country along agricultural fields, where ripe yellow canola and other seed crops grow.

Fort St. John is also set within the Alberta Plateau, a relatively flat area compared to the rest of British Columbia. Surrounding Fort St. John is part of the boreal forest, specifically known in British Columbia as the Boreal White and Black Spruce Zone. The Boreal White and Black Spruce Zone covers approximately 10% of British Columbia's land area, and the majority of the Alberta Plateau in northeast BC, from Fort St. John to the Yukon border.

Climate and Weather

While Fort St. John experiences cold northern winters, unlike many of the Canadian Prairie Provinces it does find reprieve from cold snaps when Chinook winds blow in across the Rocky Mountains from the west. Average summer temperatures range from 10.2˚C/50.4˚F to 20.2˚C/68.4˚F, and average te,peratures in the winter range from -18.4˚C/1˚F to -6˚C/21.2˚F . This variance in seasonal temperatures accommodates a range of summer and winter activities, including hiking, golfing, cross-country skiing, and snowmobiling.
