Williams Lake Dining

Fraser Inn Williams Lake - Rosemary Smart
Fraser Inn Williams Lake, Rosemary Smart photo
Williams Lake is definitely cowboy country, so steaks and burgers rank high on the menu of restaurants in town. But there are other options.  The city boasts more than 35 restaurants, bistros, pubs, and cafés to choose from.  Choices range between North American McDonalds-style fast food, Chinese or Mexican options, or more exotic fare including sushi or souvlaki.  Downtown visitors will find numerous good restaurants close to shopping, while the area close to the junction of Highway 97 and Highway 20 offers fast-food options for those on the run.

Williams Lake Restaurants and Cafés

Some of the city's top nosh include:
  • The Hearth Restaurant, operated by the Cariboo Friendship Society, offers family-style dining and a menu for the diet-conscious.
  • Carmen's Restaurant, located within the Overlander Hotel, bills itself as a fine dining establishment and has an eclectic menu (everything from schnitzel to salads to souvlaki to steak) and a nice view of the city.
  • Karen's Place on 2nd Avenue is one of those little, tucked-away places known by the locals for its excellent lunches and Mexican food – though it does serve dinner, too.
  • The Gecko Tree, located right downtown on MacKenzie Ave N, appeals to the health-minded traveler looking for organic and whole grain options. It's ranked among the best of the casual restaurants in Williams Lake, and considered quite the funky little spot in town.

Practical Points

Tim Horton's and the Husky Restaurant are on the highway at the south end of town and are open 24 hours a day, for those late night snack urges.  Some restaurants, however, close as early as 8pm.  A quick call ahead can save a wasted trip.  Visit the Tourism Discovery Centre (Visitor Centre) south of Williams Lake on Highway 97 for a list of choices, a map and directions.
