Although restaurants in Wells are open year round, there is a better selection during the summer season.  Several family style restaurants exist within the community of Wells, and nearby Barkerville has a variety of options along the main street for sit-down dining or snack n' stroll.

Resorts within the Bowron Lake Park, 30km/18mi north-east of Wells, open their restaurant doors to those exploring the Park's lakes and rivers during the summer.

Local Restaurants

In addition to the options available at the area's hotels and resorts, there are some good dining experiences worth searching out. 
  • The Bear's Paw Café on Highway 26 in Wells offers family dinners with live entertainment.
  • The White Cap Motor Inn and RV Park has a special Thai menu on Saturday nights during the summer season. 
  • The Lung Duck Tong restaurant in Barkerville is renowned for its Chinese cooking.
  • Wake-up-Jake Restaurant, in Barkerville, features dishes based on recipes from the 1870s, including fresh trout, hearty stews and high tea. It's also famous for its coffee, which staff hand- grind.
  • The Goldfield Bakery, also in Barkerville, offers fresh baked sourdough bread in addition to other delectable treats.

Winter Eating

When snows pile up along the trails and the swish of cross-country skis replaces the tramp of hikers, all of Barkerville closes for the winter, as do some businesses in Wells. Two restaurants, Pooley Street Café in the Wells Hotel on Pooley street, and the Northwoods Inn Restaurant on Highway 26, remain open, ensuring some options for those traveling here for the winter playground.

Practical Points

For up-to-date information on dining choices available and seasonal hours, stop at the Wells Visitor Centre on Highway 26, west of town, or drop in at the Service Station or the Wells General Store.  The District of Wells office has a good selection of brochures and staff members are a valuable source of information if the Visitor Centre is closed.
