Dining options are extremely limited in Alert Bay, but good, rib-sticking food can be enjoyed in a variety of waterfront-strip restaurants and purchased from the local grocery store.
Cafés The Culture Shock Interactive Gallery, a two-minute walk west on Front Street from the ferry, is the best spot for those craving a fruit smoothie or upscale, barista-prepared caffeine fix.
Casual Fare Stroll along Fir Street east from the ferry terminus to scope out the selection. The upstairs restaurant at the Pass 'N Thyme Inn is a bright, friendly space with a fine selection of seafood appetizers (pan-fried Fanny Bay, BC oysters, for instance) and tasty range of sandwiches, wraps, and surf/turf entrees.
Patio Dining The best oceanfront patio in town adjoins the newly renovated downstairs pub at the Nimpkish Hotel. Relax in the afternoon sun with nachos and a pint of beer, or step inside the pub and get to know the locals. Live music is occasionally booked here.
Chinese Food Chop suey, chow mein, and all the classic staples of Chinese-Canadian cuisine are on the menu at the Orca Inn (289 Fir Street). There's a cold beer, wine, and spirits store on the premises. The deli counter at the Shop Rite grocery store (89 Fir Street) sells sliced meats and makes sandwiches to go.
