Wells Accommodations

Wells, nearby Barkerville, and Bowron Lake Provincial Park have limited, but comfortable, accommodations offering typical amenities. Most are open year round and some have retained the flavor of this historic area. Enjoy the atmosphere of authentic frontier lodgings, stay lake-side, or be completely independent and camp in the pristine wilderness.

Wells and Barkerville Lodgings

Facilities include one hotel (the Wells Hotel), two motels, and one B&B within the community of Wells. All are open year round. Barkerville, 8km/5mi further on Highway 26, has two cozy bed and breakfasts, including the Kelly House B&B, as well as the St. George Hotel which also bills itself as a B&B. Barkerville accommodations are renovated and furnished to reflect the "luxurious" accommodation of gold rush-era towns.

In Bowron Lake Provincial Park (located 32km/20mi east of Wells), there are three lodges or resorts, with cabins ranging from basic and rustic, to elegantly furnished.

Camping

Wells and the surrounding area is best known for exceptional camping opportunities. Choices abound. There are private campgrounds within the community of Wells, more than a hundred camp sites in three campgrounds near Barkerville, a drive-in, BC Parks campground on Bowron Lake and numerous tenting sites along the Bowron Lake canoe circuit.

Campsites within Wells and near Barkerville all accommodate tents as well as smaller RVs. Some have pull-through RV sites and several offer full service sites, hot showers and sani-stations. Campsites a few km from Barkerville even have horse paddock rentals. Cariboo Joy RV Park in Wells and Lowhee campground near Barkerville both have sani-stations.

Practical Points

Plan ahead during the months of June through September and book accommodation well in advance. The area around Wells is high mountain country and temperatures can be quite cool even in mid-summer. Bring warm clothing, rain gear and mosquito repellent.
