Ucluelet Accommodations
Although very much the working fishing village, Ucluelet offers an oversized range of accommodations including more than a dozen hotels and resorts, two hostels, seven scenically situated campgrounds, and more than 40 charming bed-and-breakfasts, motels, cottages and cabins.
Wilderness Digs
What distinguishes "Ukee" as the locals call it, is that whatever the level of accommodation, it's probably smack in the middle of nature, within eyeshot of Pacific rollers, golden beaches, old-growth rainforest and coastal wildlife. Some of the myriad options include the following:
Ucluelet Lodge
Youth, eco-travellers and budget tourists go straight to the Ucluelet Lodge (250 Main St), the backpackers' hotel where comfort cleanliness, good food and a fun atmosphere prevail. It's dog-friendly to boot.
West Coast Motel
The West Coast Motel (279 Hemlock St) on the Harbour appeals to fitness buffs with its indoor swimming pool, sauna and Ucluelet's only fitness facility. Everything is accessible to the public.
B&Bs in Ucluelet
Bed-and-breakfasts do Mom-and-Pop proud: B&B Majestic Point includes king-size beds, soaker tubs and fireplaces. Harbour House (1451 Port Albion Rd), has a "tree house" with a hot tub and a beach frequented by bears and eagles. Snug Harbour Inn (460 Marine Drive), offers fireplaces and balconies with every room. And Reef Point (166 Coral Way), gets a special nod from locals for its celebrated breakfasts and in-house photography gallery.
Black Rock Oceanfront Resort
Top-of-the-line is the new Black Rock Oceanfront Resort (596 Marine Dr), strategically positioned atop a rocky promontory. This is a contemporary wilderness palace, all bold lines, huge public spaces, natural light and the masculine textures of rock, water, glass, steel and wood. It encompasses 71 rooms and 62 beach suites, the latter outfitted with balconies, fireplaces, kitchens, flat-screen TVs and eye-filling ocean and rainforest views.
Float is its lounge with fireplace and ocean view. Fetch (an oceanographic term relating to the energy of waves) is its restaurant, rightly concentrating on the fish and seafood tourists crave. The spa is called Drift, and drift away one does as a therapist applies her gift of touch.
