Powell River Accommodations
The Powell River area offers a broad range of comfortable accommodations for various budgets. Choose from hotels, motels, bed and breakfasts, cottages, resorts, camping and RV parks.
Hotels and Motels
Heritage hotels are a Powell River trademark, many dating from the city's early 20th-century boom years with Western Canada's largest paper mill. The Old Courthouse Inn, overlooking the mill and the harbour, has quaint vintage furnishings, and features the Manzanita, a seasonally inspired restaurant.
Other area heritage hotels include the century-old Rodmay Heritage Hotel, offering 20 rooms and a 1930s-style diner in Powell River's National Historic District, and the Historic Lund Hotel, which has an in-house art gallery, and waterfront access to kayaking and bear-watching boat trips.
The Powell River Town Centre Hotel is the city's biggest with more than 70 rooms (including deluxe suites and bridal suites) and full conference facilities. Serviceable motels are scattered along the Sunshine Coast Highway (Highway 101), which turns into Marine Avenue as it runs through Powell River along the waterfront.
B&Bs and Cottages
Thanks to the high standards of the Sunshine Coast B&B, Cottage Owners Association, Powell River is known for its well-maintained bed and breakfasts and cottages. There are close to 30 different options.
One standout is the Beacon B&B and Spa, which faces Malaspina Strait. Watch bald eagles feeding in the trees across the road.
For those staying on Texada Island, a 35-minute ferry ride from Powell River, the secluded Captain's Bed and Breakfast is a fine choice. Sample homemade jams and jellies with breakfast, and check with host Bob Timms about bird-watching, hiking, and kayaking around Texada Island.
Cottage options are varied. Check out the Floating Cabins on Powell Lake, which offer boat rentals, trout fishing, and daily or weekly rates. Magical Dome, located near the village of Lund and Desolation Sound, provides bathhouse and spa facilities and lots of wildlife sighting opportunities.
Resorts
There are a handful of small resorts around Powell River. The long-standing Desolation Resort provides oceanfront cottage, chalet, and apartment stays, and kayaking, canoeing, and boat cruise packages are available. The acclaimed Laughing Oyster restaurant, overlooking Okeover Inlet, is nearby.
Camping and RV Parks
Powell River has more than 10 campgrounds and RV parks (both private and provincial). For a pleasant, central location off Marine Avenue, try the Willingdon Beach Campsite, which has 81 sites (including full-service RV hook-ups).
Saltery Bay Provincial Park is situated 27km/17mi south of Powell River and 1km/0.6mi north of the Saltery Bay ferry terminal for connections to Earls Cove on the lower Sunshine Coast. The 69ha/170ac park has 42 vehicle-accessible campsites. Scuba dive to see the submerged "Emerald Princess" statue, or view by canoe the historic First Nations middens (mounds of seashells) in this area.
