Parksville Accommodations
Parksville has been welcoming visitors ever since European settlers arrived here just after the American Civil War. In fact, the very first such landowner, John Hirst, opened a hotel near his farm at the mouth of the Englishman River in the 1870s. Today the local oceanfront is lined with first-rate resorts – some venerable but newly updated favorites, others out-of-the-box new. Elsewhere options include a good selection of B&Bs and campgrounds and RV sites.
B&Bs
While Qualicum Beach is the B&B capital in the Oceanside region, some 30 homes in Parksville and area welcome overnight guests. Clusters of B&Bs are found in the rural outback of Errington and Nanoose Bay where peace and quiet reign supreme.
Resorts
Most of the major getaway spots are clustered along Resort Drive southeast of Rathtrevor Beach Provincial Park. Condos, waterfront townhomes, and a spa resort are all here. The competition keeps operators on their toes as premier destinations like Tigh-Na-Mara and swank newcomer Sunrise Ridge Waterfront Resort continually raise the bar with upgrades and/or new lodgings. Even the affordable Arbutus Grove Motel, across the Island Highway from Resort Drive, has upped the ante with new beds and quality bedding.
Camping
Mongolian-style yurts (round tent/cabins with vaulted roofs) are a trademark at Riverbend Resort Campground, which also offers cottages, RV sites and tenting alongside the Englishman River. Nine other campgrounds are in the region along, with dozens of short and long-term vacation rental homes.
Note: Book well ahead when planning trips during ultra-busy summer and holiday seasons.
