Gabriola Island Accommodations
Gabriola Island has no luxury hotels or resorts, but does have a wide range of accommodations including a resort, hotels, inns, motels, B&Bs, vacation rentals, campgrounds and one unique hostel. Since there's no downtown, they're scattered around the island.
Haven Resort & Institute
Set among old-growth cedars, the Haven Resort & Institute is far from a traditional resort. For more than 25 years, it has specialized in personal and professional development through a variety of retreat programs in communications, relationships, self-discovery, sexuality and other key areas of life. But it's also available to the travelling public as an accommodation with perks including indoor and outdoor swimming pools, sauna, gym and highly regarded buffet meals.
Hotels and Inns
Inn at Dragon's Keep
The wonderfully named Inn at Dragon's Keep sits on a private bay with sandstone cliffs and old-growth forest. With 10 hotel rooms, sleeper cabins and a spectacular location, it's a natural for kayakers, mountain bikers and backpackers.
Surf Lodge
Lodge bedrooms and private cabins can be rented at the Surf Lodge, 20 minutes from the ferry terminal.
Page's Resort & Marina
Page's Resort & Marina offers furnished, self-catering cottages overlooking the blue of Silva Bay. Accommodations come with full kitchens, bathrooms, fireplaces and large decks. Its bookstore includes a remarkable wall of books by Gabriola Island authors, the works from detective to children's fiction.
Silva Inn
The Silva Inn has seven oceanfront suites with self-catering facilities and lovely views of Silva Bay and the Flat Top Islands from its lengthy shared verandah. Barbecue included.
B&Bs
Some 22 B&Bs offer extras including panoramic ocean views, private decks, hot tubs, gas fireplaces and barbecues, massage, self-catering and proximity to golf, shopping and restaurants. Cliff Cottage B&B also rents scooters, mountain bikes, cars and minivans.
The Hostel
Thirty Odd Acres is the world's smallest hostel. It's a single cabin, compact, furnished, complete. Breakfast is optional, but the eggs are as fresh as they come and the owner makes her own maple syrup.
Campgrounds
Located near the ferry terminal, Descanso Bay Regional Park offers 32 campsites with oceanfront views. One nearby bay is designated for harvesting oysters, clams and mussels straight from the beach. Campsites are also available in the gardens and forest at Page's Resort & Marina at Silva Bay.
Pop into the Gabriola Island Visitor Centre for information and brochures, #5-377 Berry Point Rd. Proceed cautiously because the turn-off after the ferry terminal is maddeningly easy to miss.
