Park in BC (JF Bergeron photo)
Two oceanfront provincial parks and an evolving network of green spaces provide ample walking, birding, and outdoor pleasures on Denman Island.
All credit for the island's newly protected lands goes to the Denman Conservancy Association. Founded in 1991, this volunteer community group has saved some of Denman's most environmentally sensitive forests and wetlands.
Boyle Point Provincial Park
Photo-worthy views of the light station on Chrome Island off Denman's southern tip are the reward for an easy hour-long round trip stroll to Boyle Point Provincial Park. Park at the end of East Road past the Gravelly Bay ferry dock. Detour to Eagle Rock halfway along the second-growth forested route for views of Hornby Island. Or carry on to the point, where sea lions bark loudly in the winter and fish for herring offshore from the sandstone cliffs.

Fillongley Provincial Park
Once owned by Denman pioneer George Beadnell, Fillongley Provincial Park covers 23ha/57ac of gently sloping upland in addition to a foreshore camping ground and sand spit. Five short trails cover about 2km/0.8mi in total. Creek Trail begins at the north end of the campsite and heads west past the public toilets into one of Denman's last unlogged, old-growth forests. The Homestead and Middle trails lead to the remains of the Beadnell homestead (once a lively social spot with its own bowling green but now a wildflower-filled meadow).
Central Park
Central Park is the crown jewel of the Denman Conservancy Association's half-dozen holdings and a focal point in plans to create a linked series of trails in the island's northern half. The 60ha/147ac parcel of land was last logged in 2000, but its wetlands and fast-growing Coastal Douglas-fir trees are springing back fast. The main entrance is off Denman Road near the Marcus Isbister Old School Centre. An information kiosk here provides details on a network of signed trails created and maintained by volunteers. Cyclists, hikers, and horseback riders utilize the routes, though a lovely boardwalk that links the Swale Trail with Beaufort View Path is for pedestrians only.
More Green Spaces
Explore more of Denman's newly protected lands by walking the trails at Morrison Marsh (near Boyle Point) and the Lindsay Dickson Nature Reserve (about halfway along East Road towards Gravelly Bay). While the latter is mostly forested, it also includes a sedimentary rock foreshore favored by river otters and mink. The Denman Conservancy also maintains a boardwalk at Winter Wren Wood leading to Chickadee Lake's boat launch and picnic area.
