Farms & Markets
Fresh produce
Unlike a century ago, Denman Island is no longer a major supplier of dairy products, livestock and fruit to BC markets.
Yet the fertile soil and long growing season here continues to encourage a wealth of small-scale growers who make the 100-mile diet a reality for those craving fresh, seasonal, and local food. Island chef Sally Rae's cookbook For the Love of Food is available at Abraxas Books in the village.
Orchards
Denman has been renowned for its apples since pioneer Tom Piercy's orchard – once the largest of its kind on the west coast - first began producing fruit in about 1890. Visitors are welcome to drop by the original Piercy spread, which now operates as West Isle Farm (2830 Piercy Road). Its market is open daily from June to November.

Numerous varieties of certified organic apples are available on site at island farms. Apple Lane Orchard (2960 Lake Road) grows heritage, dessert and cider varieties and hosts permaculture workshops in the summer. The honour system applies at the self-serve store at East Cider Orchard (2831 East Road). Spartans, Jona Golds, Asian Apple Pears, Red Gravensteins (ideal for apple sauce), Sweet Boughs and jugs of refreshing apple cider are available in the barn at the end of a winding country driveway.
Denman Island Foods Directory
Track down a copy of the annually updated guide to local growers in Denman Village stores. Published by the community group Renewable Energy Denman Island, it lists some 50 island farms along with caterers, bakers, garden suppliers, and cooperatives. Phone numbers are included for each listing. A Denman shopping basket could include free-range chickens and turkeys, grass-fed beef and numerous fruits and veggies – potatoes, salad greens, plums, grapes, eggplant, garlic, figs and berries included.
Farmer's Market & the Denman Island General Store
The best one-stop shopping for veggies and fruit is at the Denman Farmer's Market, held on spring, summer, and fall behind the Marcus Isbister Old School Centre (5901 Denman Road, also home to the recycling depot). Snack on sushi, samosas, and almond shortbread. Enjoy local musicians. Get a massage. And take home a canvas shopping bag stuffed with whatever is in season. The other reliable option for a broad selection of takeaway island produce is the general store in Denman Village.
Grazing on Denman
Plan a trip for one of Denman's quarterly equinox or solstice Vegan Potluck dinner parties and bring a dish to share. Local food is also emphasized at the Kaffee Klatsch Bistro, especially when this cozy dining spot offers one of its special menus on weekends.
