Denman Island hosts a writer's festival, musical concerts and a remarkable arts workshop series that caters to creatives looking to upgrade their skills or develop new ones.
For the latest events, check the island's monthly newsletter, The Flagstone, and scan the bulletin boards in Denman Village. Or head west on Denman Road and pullover at the top of the escarpment next to the "graffiti fence" (where handpainted community announcements are made and then whitewashed one after the next year-round).
Denman Island Readers & Writers Festival
Since its low-key launch in 2002, this annual mid-July week of readings, panel discussions and workshops has evolved into one of the liveliest and certainly most intimate literary events on Canada's west coast.
The Denman Island Readers & Writers Festival is held in Denman Village's small venues and attendees are in close quarters with such notable visiting writers as Ronald Wright, Sharon Butala, Marilyn Bowering, and Bill Gaston.

Late ferries allow off-island daytrippers to attend, but event organizers advise anyone wanting to stay on the island during the festival to book accommodations ASAP.
Arts Workshops
The Denman Arts Centre (at the junction of Denman and Northwest roads in the village) draws locals and off-islanders to workshops throughout the year. These are led by veteran artists, writers, photographers, musicians, and songwriters. Learn fabric art with Texada Island craftsperson Deb Dumka, hand drumming with Hornby Island's Ron Sitter or improvisational vocal technique with Denman's own Annie Siegel.
Musical Evenings
Concerts Denman presents an annual concert series at the Community Hall featuring roots artists, world music groups, comedians, and more. The 200-capacity venue also hosts touring bands and local musicians throughout the year. On Friday nights, some islanders catch the Hornby Island ferry for live jazz at the Thatch Pub.
Home & Garden Tour
The annual Home and Garden Tour in the spring attracts upwards of 1500 people eager to check out 10 or so of the island's more remarkable properties. The home of the renowned writer and garden authority Des Kennedy is often on the tour, which raises funds for the Denman Conservancy Association. The Globe & Mail named it one of Canada's top-six horticultural events.
