It has two border crossings. Delta is also a featured stop on numerous interesting driving routes through the Vancouver, Coast & Mountains region.
The main Douglas/Peach Arch Border Crossing is where Interstate 5 heads north into Canada and becomes Hwy 99 into Vancouver. The second crossing is at Boundary Bay on 56th Street and leads only into Point Roberts, a small US peninsula enclave frequented by boaters and holiday makers.
Car & RV Travel
Because Delta covers such a large and diverse area, most people travel to and around its communities by car. Car rentals are available in Tsawwassen although most people come here to rent RVs. Cruise Canada and CanaDream both have facilities in North Delta.
Ferry Travel
BC Ferries operates a major terminal out of Tsawwassen's western edge with routes going to Victoria and Nanaimo on Vancouver Island as well as to the Southern Gulf Islands. Reservations are optional but not required. Be aware that on holidays and weekends, southbound vehicular traffic can get hot and heavy on Hwys 99 and 17 with ferry-bound commuters and getaway travellers.
Try to travel at off-peak times to avoid frustrating delays.
Foot passengers can bus it out to the terminal via TransLink connections from downtown Vancouver. Pacific Coach is a faster option; it offers services directly into downtown Victoria with pick up/stop-off points along the way.
The terminal does have a paid parking lot where foot passengers can leave their vehicles. The Tsawwassen First Nations operates a Park n' Go parking service at the beginning of the terminal causeway.
Air Travel
As Canada's fifth busiest airport Vancouver Boundary Bay Airport caters to almost 200,000 landings a year, made up largely of recreational and training aircraft that comprise country's largest flight school. Amidst flying circles, it is known as a 'pilot's airport' although a recent $20 million upgrade is broadening its appeal to the corporate jet sector, including some Alpha Executive Air daily commuter flights to Victoria and beyond.
New facilities include a patio restaurant beside the runway so diners can enjoy the comings and goings of various aircraft.
Public Transportation
TransLink provides bus service to major centres in Tsawwassen, North Delta and Ladner from which there are community shuttles as well as Delta Sunshine Taxi and Tsawassen (Surdel) Taxi. TransLink buses from Tsawassen and Ladner link to Richmond's SkyTrain; buses from North Delta go to Scott Road SkyTrain. Greyhound Canada buses operate to Tsawwassen only.
Bicycle Travel
Cyclists are not permitted to pedal through the George Massey Tunnel. Riders should contact the Pedal Shuttle via Mainroad Contracting (604-881-4140) to arrange for pick up and drop off on either side of the tunnel exits. It is a free service, offered between April and October.
