Cross-Country Skiing

Cross-country skiing is a well-loved activity in northern BC, and in Dawson Creek this is no exception. There are a number of winter activity options here.
Bear Mountain Nordic Ski Trails
For those interested in getting some exercise on a forested wintry setting, it is well worth spending a day or two skiing along the Bear Mountain cross-country ski trails. Worried about the cold? Four warming shelters have been built where skiers can visit and cook a lunch over an open fire. Look for birds or animals such as deer or moose.
To reach the trails, travel along the bypass road ("Dangerous Goods Route"). Turn onto Adams Road and follow the road west 2km/1.2mi. Turn south on Road 223 (Radar Lake Road) for 7.4km/4.6mi. Be sure to watch for road signs. There is parking available to the right of the trailhead.

Classic and Skate Skiing
There are more than 20km/12mi of trails operated by the Bear Mountain Nordic Ski Association. Trails exist for skiers of all ages and skills, and are groomed for classic and skate skiing. There are some downhill trails that will provide advanced skiers with a bit of a rush as they whoosh down steeper hills. Although there are no lit trails, each year the ski club hosts a series of moonlight skis.
A copy of the cross-country ski brochure is available at the Dawson Creek Visitor Centre, which includes a colour coded trail map. There is a good mix of beginner, intermediate and advanced routes. Trails loop around and intersect with one another, so it is a good idea to have the map handy to avoid any confusion.
A fee may be required in order to access the trails, so check in at the Visitor Centre for more details. Ski rentals may not be available, so bring ski equipment and dress appropriately for the weather as winter conditions can vary from mild to extremely cold.
