A few choice lakes near Dawson Creek offer opportunities to pull in a rainbow trout, a northern pike, or a walleye (also referred to as pickerel).
Swan Lake, One Island Lake, and the Kiskatinaw River are easy to reach, while Stewart Lake provides a more off-the-beaten path option. Ice fishing is also possible near Dawson Creek.

At Swan Lake, anglers can catch and release walleye, which is an exciting fish to catch, as it tends to fight while it is reeled in. Anglers can also try their luck catching northern pike, stocked yellow perch and burbot. There is a boat launch and dock on-site for anyone planning to fish by boat.

One Island Lake
One Island Lake is well-known as a fantastic fishing lake. Fish for rainbow and brook trout, which are stocked annually, as well as northern pike and bull trout. A public boat launch is located at One Island Lake Provincial Park. The lake is often windy, so a windbreaker will help visitors to really enjoy their fishing experience. Fresh caught fish will make an excellent meal at the on-site picnic tables and fire pits.
Kiskatinaw River
Kiskatinaw River Provincial Park has potential opportunities to fish. Fish species observed in this river that may be of interest include Arctic grayling, burbot, mountain whitefish, northern pike, rainbow trout and walleye.
Stewart Lake
Stewart Lake is an off-the-beaten path fishing location, which is stocked with rainbow trout. It is a small lake that is located on gravel roads between Dawson Creek and Fort St. John. Note also that depending on the year, the route into Stewart Lake can be riddled with potholes. To reach this lake, a truck or sport-utility vehicle is likely the best choice. Check with locals about the best access or enquire at the Dawson Creek Visitor Centre.

Ice fishing on the lakes during warmer winter days is a great way to enjoy the northern climate. Ensuring safe ice thickness, appropriate clothing and the right gear is key to a safe and enjoyable experience. It is important to be aware of the regulations prior to fishing in any of the lakes or rivers in the area. Anglers must purchase and carry an appropriate license to fish in British Columbia, as well as follow the current Freshwater Fishing Regulations.
