Dawson Creek is best known as "Mile Zero" of the Alaska Highway.
Located just minutes from town on the Alaska Highway, the 18-hole Dawson Creek Golf & Country Club offers a manicured golf course with three par-4 holes. 16km/10mi north of Dawson Creek on the Alaska Highway, Farmington Fairways is a 9-hole course rated as a par 36. It has a clubhouse, a Pro Shop and a 300 yard driving range.
The Bear Mountain cross-country ski area offers ripping summer mountain biking trails. Or enjoy a peaceful, forest walk and learn about the region's flora and fauna along Radar Lake Community Forest's well-marked interpretive trails.
Arts, Culture & History
In addition to the Dawson Creek historic and heritage sites, nearby Pouce Coupe's museum has exhibits about pioneering in Peace River Country and the two World Wars.
Attractions
Gardeners may be interested in the eleven themed gardens that make up Gardens North, one of which is the rose garden at Walter Wright Pioneer Village. The farmers market, open Saturday from May to October, is worth a visit for anyone interested in locally made arts and crafts, or locally grown food products.
Entertainment
Dawson Creek has more entertainment venues than its small size suggests. Encana Center is the newest arena for sporting events and major concerts in the South Peace Community Multiplex (300 Highway 2, west of the Dawson Creek Regional Airport), and it seats up to 6,500 people. Other entertainment venues include the Kiwanis Performing Arts Centre, Sudeten Hall and the 600-seat Unchagah Hall.
The Dawson Creek Agricultural Fair, Rodeo and Exhibition provides a truly authentic feel of Dawson Creek's agricultural roots. For five days each August, there are temporary entertainment venues and exciting events such as bareback and saddle broncos, bull-riding, team roping and calf wrestling, in addition to musical entertainment, livestock shows, horticultural displays, and carnival rides.
The Dawson Creek Exhibition Fair Grounds are located west of the airport, tucked behind the Multiplex. Parking and camping areas are specifically designated for this event, located east of the multiplex, turning off from Highway 2. There are parking and camping fees.
Water Activities
Warm summer days may inspire swimming at the man-made Rotary Lake (Mile '0' Park, Mile 1, Alaska Highway), the Kiskatinaw River or Swan Lake. The Ken Borek Aquatic Center offers an indoor swim option, with eight lanes 25m/82ft long.
Winter Activities
Out-of-town curlers will find winter bonspiel opportunities at the local curling rink. Skating opportunities for all skills and ages are found at the Memorial and Kin arenas. Snowmobiling is a popular winter activity in the area. A Dawson Creek & Area Snowmobile Trail Map is available at the Visitor Centre.
Tours and Driving Routes
From all accounts, touring the privately operated Sewell Valley Game Farm provides a northern agriculture and range experience. Hay rides and animal encounters are some of the tour's activities. Booking in advance is recommended.
