For freshwater sport-fishing lovers, Chilliwack is a world-class destination.
Sturgeon fishing, salmon fishing, steelhead fishing and trout fishing are among the most popular activities for anglers.
The Fraser River, British Columbia's longest river at 1,375km/854mi, is the prime source of Chilliwack's fishing bonanza, along with the Chilliwack/Vedder River.
Sturgeon, Salmon and Steelhead Fishing
White sturgeon can be caught year-round on a catch-and-release basis in the Fraser River. These are the largest freshwater fish in North America, some as big as 4.5m/15ft in length and 450kg/1,000lb in weight. Sturgeon are easily identifiable, covered with bony plates rather than fish scales.
The salmon fishing season runs from April to October, and encompasses all five species of Pacific salmon: chinook, chum, coho, pink and sockeye.

The chinook season kicks off first, and the "king salmon" can get as big as 29kg/65lb. Pink salmon return to the Fraser every two years (2011, 2013, 2015 etc.) from the middle of August to early October, while sockeye abound during the summer months. Chinook, coho, and chum can be found on the Harrison and Chilliwack/Vedder Rivers in the fall.
Hatchery-spawned and wild steelhead (a sea-run variety of rainbow trout) can grow up to 9kg/20lb and can be caught between October and April on the Chilliwack/Vedder River. Only hatchery steelhead can be kept; wild ones must be released according to law.
Other varieties of trout can be found in Chilliwack's numerous local lakes.
Practical Fishing Points
One popular local starting point for fishing trips is Island 22 (45695 Cartmell Rd), a city-owned park that includes a boat launch on the Fraser River. To rent fishing equipment or discover the best angling hotspots, visitors can contact one of Chilliwack's many professional fishing outfits, such as Great River Fishing Adventures, Great Catch Fishing Adventures, Aqua Ventures Guided Fishing, or BC Sportfishing Group.
