Whale Watching

In the Cariboo Chilcotin Coast region, go whale watching near the coastal communities of Bella Coola, Klemtu, Shearwater and Bella Bella.
Look for Orcas (killer whales) and humpback, minke and grey whales as they migrate through through this region on their way to Alaska or Mexico. Whales are often spotted near the Great Bear Rainforest – the world’s largest remaining continuous tract of intact temperate rainforest and home of the rare Kermode (Spirit) bear.
A handful of whale-watching tours and cruising companies run wildlife viewing excursions that include looking for whales and other wildlife. Many incorporate local Aboriginal culture too.

Whale Watching in the Cariboo Chilcotin Coast
Between May and late September, take a wildlife/wilderness excursion or a cruise and be rewarded with sightings of whales, bears, porpoises, dolphins, bald eagles and more. Join a grizzly bear-watching tour from Bella Coola to the Great Bear Rainforest and look for whales surfacing or breaching en route.
Or spend multiple days onboard a yacht with a cruising company (some leave locally, while others from depart from Vancouver Island or Northern BC) and sail the straits, glimpsing Orcas or Pacific white-sided dolphins from the deck.
Practical Points
- Peak season for whale watching is between May and October.
- Most whale watching operators require advance reservations.
- Dress in warm layers as boat decks can be breezy.
- Seasickness is generally not an issue, but for trips on open waters be prepared for some motion.
- Visit local Visitor Centres for help with trip ideas, planning and transportation.
