Beaches & Swimming
Jericho Beach, Vancouver (Tourism Vancouver/John Sinal photo)
TripAdvisor named Tofino (#1), Okanagan (#2) and Parksville (#3) "Best Beaches in Canada" in the 2011 Readers Choice Awards.
British Columbia has every type of beach imaginable: remote, urban, sand and pebble. There are some spectacular ocean beaches along the BC mainland coast as well as Vancouver Island, the Gulf Islands and Haida Gwaii/Queen Charlotte Islands.
Inland, many of the regions boast warm lake waters or scenically rugged settings, making them popular for water recreation that includes: surfing, swimming, canoeing, fishing, boating, windsurfing, waterskiing and kayaking. The best months for beaches and swimming are July and August.

Vancouver: Sandy beaches steps from the city and Stanley Park. Jericho, Kitsilano, Spanish Bank, and English Bay are a few favorites.
Whistler: Alpine lakes warm up enough in summer for swimming, and are great for families. Try Lost, Rainbow or Alta lakes.
Victoria: Nearby swimming areas include the unique Sooke Potholes Provincial Park.
Vancouver Coast & Mountains: Stroll the shores and pier of White Rock, dip in Harrison Lake, or visit Savary Island, the "Hawaii of the North."
Vancouver Island: Spend hours at popular Rathtrevor Beach, or head to the beaches of the west coast and in Pacific Rim National Park.
Thompson Okanagan: Visit lakeside beaches near summer-loving towns such as Kelowna, Penticton or Osoyoos. The Shuswap is another place for water activities.
Cariboo Chilcotin Coast: Cool off and swim or fish in hundreds of lakes, such as Green Lake Provincial Park or Ten Mile Lake Provincial Park.
Kootenay Rockies: Look up from lakes to see big mountains and thick forests. Arrow, Wasa and Moyie lakes are a few to explore.
