Farms & Markets
Granville Island Market, Vancouver (Canadian Tourism Commission photo)
Farms and markets have been a part of rural British Columbia life for more than 100 years.
Whether it’s the Fraser Valley, Thompson Okanagan region, or Vancouver Island, many farms welcome visitors for tours and demonstrations. Purchase fresh fruit and produce, just-collected free-range eggs, delicious cheese and milk, and much more.
Touring some of BC's best farms can provide a rather tasty education. It’s a chance to learn about organic farming and other sustainable farming practices – and taste a few samples! The Vancouver, Coast & Mountains region has self-guided Circle Farm Tours to follow.
British Columbia also hosts farmers markets in many communities. Most farmers markets take place on weekends from spring through fall, but some places also have winter markets. Markets enable shoppers to meet the farmers and artisans who grew, raised, caught or produced the food for sale. Enjoy this tempting opportunity to taste a bounty of farm-fresh local foods and to browse and buy locally made arts and crafts.

Farmers Markets and Fruit Stands
Farmers markets and roadside fruit stands and vegetable stands provide an excellent chance to chat with the farmers and buy fresh produce and unique crafts. Summer is the prime time for farmers markets, since items are in season. Contact community visitor centres for information on local markets and fruit stands.

Vancouver Island: Many Vancouver Island organic farms welcome visitors for fascinating tours and impressive tastings; the Cowichan Valley and Saanich Peninsula are key farming areas.
Numerous communities host weekend markets with locally grown and seasonal foods. Check out the Salt Spring Island Saturday Market and the "goats on the roof" market in Coombs. Popular farmers markets in Victoria include the Moss Street Market, the Peninsula Country Market, and the Metchosin Farmers Market.
Vancouver, Coast & Mountains: The pastoral Fraser Valley has well-organized Circle Farm routes – self-guided driving tours with information about farms, markets, and eateries that welcome visitors. More than 20 markets reap the fresh rewards of the Fraser Valley. In Vancouver, check out the Granville Island Public Market and the UBC Farm.
Thompson Okanagan: The best way to experience the Okanagan Valley is to taste freshly picked, luscious fruits such as cherries, peaches, apricots and apples. Roadside fruit stands are very popular. Several towns host markets and roadside fruit stands that focus on the Okanagan Valley’s peaches, cherries, and other bounty.
