Nanaimo is famous for its love of quirky fun, which truly kicked off in 1967 when a former mayor of Nanaimo famously donned a pirate costume, raised his sword & launched Nanaimo's first bathtub race. "Tubbers" & visitors from around the world have been coming to Nanaimo for more than 40 years to take part in this now world famous recreational festival & race, which includes three days of exciting Island-style summer celebrations. Celebrating our 50th year, Powell River Sea Fair, a tradition since 1963, brings together the community for fun in the sun in the last weeks of July. There are contests before & during the big weekend, a variety of entertainment, local vendor displays & a carnival. There are fireworks on Saturday night & Sunday is family day with activities focused on the little ones.

The Sooke Fine Arts Show provides the opportunity for the finest artists from Vancouver Island & BC's Coastal Islands to showcase & sell their work. Along with the more than 8,000 annual visitors who attend, the 11-day show draws hundreds of art patrons from British Columbia, western Canada, & the United States. Each July, the Trinidad & Tobago Cultural Society of BC presents the Caribbean Days Festival. This event draws a crowd of exuberant fun-lovers to North Vancouver's Waterfront Park for a weekend of parading, dining and dancing in the sunshine.

This is a weekend of tropical rhythm, cuisine, carnival and culture as only the Caribbean can offer. Over the years, the Festival has grown into the largest Caribbean event on the local calendar -- and with tens of thousands of attendees, possibly the largest cultural event of its type in BC.

Chemainus Bluegrass Extravaganza & Festival is a one day event held in downtown Chemainus. Some of the bands featured are Highrise Lonesome, 5 on A String, Drifters, The Hub City Ramblers, Bluegrass Fever, The Maple Mountain Boys and more! Saturday admission prices at a 'suggested $15 ($10 on Sunday). Rain or shine, bring your folding chairs to Wheelhouse Park for a wonderful music event.

The annual Willi Muller Memorial Challenge is July 27th - August 4th. A para-gliding and hang-gliding cross-country race. Glider pilots fly their longest distances with a bonus for being able to fly back to Golden Eco Adventure Ranch. A person's best three flights count toward the total. This fun competition has been taking place for over 10 years.

The Celebration of Light is not only Vancouver's biggest event, but it's also the largest offshore fireworks competition in the world & attracts up to 400,000 spectators along English Bay each evening. Owned by the Not For Profit Vancouver Fireworks Festival Society, 2013 marks the 23rd consecutive year of the event.
