With all the rain, wind and snow that we have had in the south coast of British Columbia this year it is wonderful to see the flowers all busrting into bloom by the beginning of March.  Even though sometimes we have a lot of rain in the winter, our winters are short, and spring arrives early to treat us to a wonderful display of colours and scents.

The flowers in White Rock and South Surrey were starting to bloom by the end of February this year, and were in full bloom by the middle of March....bet the rest of Canada can't say the same.

Living in the White Rock area does not make me appreciate it any less.  After 20 years living there it still amazes me with the beautiful scenery, parks, beaches and sunsets that are an every day experience.

My husband and I walked to the beach to enjoy some of the world famous fish and chips served right across from the beach.  After dinner we walked along the promanade feeding the gulls and enjoying the view.  We were fortunate enough to also capture this beautiful sunset...or at least the start of a very impressive sunset.

If you ever have the opportuntity to be in the area, make sure to seek out one of the fish and chip shops and enjoy eating at the beach and enjoying the view.

My family and I experienced a cultural adventure I will never forget! We paddled in a carved canoe made by our leader Joe Martin, to the shores of Echachist Island. Once ashore, we were lead by Joe and his daughter Gisele about the island and experienced its flora and fauna both by taste and history. After circling the island, we returned to the beach where Joe cooked a fresh salmon over an open fire. (Please refer to the photo). The salmon is the best I have ever eaten. After spending several hours on the island, we paddled back to Tofino and learned about many interesting water plants and animals along the way. Joe and his daughter were kind and generous, providing us with first-hand stories of their interesting lives. My son still recalls with detail the stories told to us that day.

About an hour's ride north of Terrace on the Nisga'a Highway you will find the Nisga'a Memorial Lava Beds Provincial Park. It is a site that you really have to experience; these lava beds are some of the youngest in the world only 250 years old.

The ride north is filled with amazing beauty and the landscape changes often from following the river, then Lava Lake through the lava beds, mostly with the moutains around you; then you can travel westwards to the coastal community of Gingolx which holds the annual event of Crabfest every year at the beginning of July. Along with feating on some delicious fresh crab and seafood you will be entertained by some world class muscians and very talented local singers & dancers.

Be sure to include this ride on your list of places to see, email me if you would like more information at kermodei@telus.net

The most wonderful hospitality, and of course Buffalo burgers or steaks for dinner. Buffalo sausage with eggs and pancakes for breakfast. Clean, comfortable accommodation, great hosts, and beautiful scenery at the entrance to Manning Park. Two nights wasn't enough to expore the surrounding countryside, we'll be back.

Located in the West Kootenays high above New Denver on the shore of Slocan Lake, Idaho Peak is considered a must see for Kootenay wildflowers.

The deactivated forestry road that leads up to the Peak takes you through an old ghost town named Sandon, which is where we spent a few hours looking through relics of a old mining town.

Our dog Cedar loved the view.
