Christina Lake, Beaches & Swimming

Christina Lake is one of my favourite sites in all of British Columbia. Maybe it's because I'm from the north and have not become accustomed to our freezing lakes, but the warmth and natural beauty of Christina Lake gets me every time.
Christina Lake is known as the warmest lake in Canada, in probably one of the warmest locations. When my family vacationed there temperatures reached a high of 45 degrees Celcius. Strange things started happening when it got that hot, like our watermelon fermenting and pop cans exploding. But the refreshingness of the lake made it all worth it. The south beach is split up into little sections by trees creating privacy between beach dwellers and shade on the sand. The lake is there, clear and blue, with the perfect temperature to cool you off from the hot weather.
It's the perfect destination for a relaxing setting and amazing weather.

Last week, my father’s school had an amazing opportunity to travel to Gingolx, British Columbia and partake in the culture of the Gingolx people. This video was put together to show highlights of the trip. It is a bit lengthy, but I encourage you to watch the first 4 minutes of the video and see the pictures of the community, listen to the sounds of the singers and their drums, and hear a speech from a Gingolx elder. It is an extraordinary experience of art and culture.

Fort Nelson, Hot Springs

If you are heading up Highway 37 or the Alaskan Highway be sure to make a stop at the beautiful Liard River Hot Springs.
My family and I had the pleasure of making the short detour there on our way up to Whitehorse and it was definitely worth the trip. We camped at the provincial campground located next to the river for a few days, which is a beautiful campground with campsites fully surrounded by trees.
It is a ten minute stroll down a boardwalk to get to the river, surrounded by native plants and wildlife. You'll know you reach the hotsprings when you smell the sulfur, but the chance to soak in the hot river makes it all worth it. It's a wonderful place to relax and rejuvenate.
Remember to wear lots of bug dope and keep your eyes open for bears and be sure to enjoy the beauty of this natural setting.

Terrace, Sightseeing Tours

Yesterday, my fellow employees and I had the pleasure of taking a tour with Split Mountain Adventures around the Terrace area and then over to the Kitselas Canyon.
We met the two tour guides at Terrace's historical George Little House, the original house of the George Little, the founder of Terrace, which is now the local train station. The guides were very welcoming, friendly and knowledgeable about the Terrace area, with many interesting stories about the begginning of the community. They took us to a look out of the Skeena River showing the places the old ferry boats used to travel down.
We then travelled the Kitselas Canyon and you can read all about our experience there on 'Daniel at Kermodei Tourism' 's blog from yesterday. I throughly recommend taking this tour when you're in the Terrace area for a facinating trip full of history, culture and adventure.

Terrace, Farms & Markets

Skeena Valley Farmers Market is the largest market in northern British Columbia and from what I know, simply the best. I had the pleasure of going this morning as well as the past few weeks since I've been home in Terrace and not once has it disappointed.
The market has over 70 vendors with preserves, baking, crafts, jewelry, art, plants, vegetables, eateries, and local meat. It is a wonderful place to stroll through and then sit and have a bite to eat while listening to the live music. This farmers market is a real treat, and if you're in the Terrace area on a Saturday morning be sure to check it out, this is one place you don't want to miss.

Stewart, Sightseeing Tours

Highway 37A has to arguably be one of the most beautiful highways in British Columbia. That stretch of road alone holds beautiful cascading waterfalls, snow cap mountains you have to strain to see the top of and all kinds of wildlife grazing along side. The road itself is very windy and with a mountain on one side and the river on the other, it's definitely one to take slow, allowing more time to take in the surroundings.
Be sure to pull over along your way at Bear Glacier, a beautiful blue glacier found 20 minutes from Meziadin Junction. Once you reach Stewart, take a drive down main street and check out the local shops, or go for a walk along the beautiful boardwalk that takes you out towards the ocean.
Highway 37A is a breathtakingly gorgeous drive and I promise you won't regret the trip up north to take in the vast beauty.
