Another peaceful evening in the Peace Country-perfect for a fly fishing trip!  We tossed all our gear in the truck and headed down to the shores of the Murray River near Chetwynd, near the confluence of the Murray and Pine rivers.

This little spot was perfect for the kids, as there's a warm creek running through the beach that they could play in while the adults fished the river.  I caught a beautiful rainbow trout that evening too!

Access to the shore is down a very rough gravel road-inquire locally for directions.  The dust and bumps are totally worth it for the beautiful view of the river valleys and the warm, sandy beach.

Last weekend, my partner and I loaded up the kids with their new toy fishing rods and headed out to try our luck in a new fishing spot.  We headed down a popular back road and found ourselves a great little fishing hole along the Sukunka River, just south of Chetwynd.

While we didn't have any luck catching fish, we certainly had a great evening playing in the water and teaching the kids to cast their "flies" (mostly sticks and leaves!).

The Sukunka Forest Service Road is a very busy road, and anyone travelling it must use a radio.

Good thing Chetwynd has two great car washes, because we sure needed one after our last 4x4ing excursion!

I had an absolute blast driving through the big mud holes on a local 4x4ing road in our 1979 Ford F150 pickup truck. Within the first few minutes the truck was completely plastered with mud! Once we navigated through all the mud puddles and ruts in the road, we saw some beautiful local countryside and even a few deer in a meadow.

As always when heading out into the backcountry we made sure our family knew where we were going and when we planned to be back. We carried some extra fuel and made sure the winch was in good working order in case we got stuck!

In the past couple of years I have fallen in love with quilting. Everywhere I go, I always try to check out local quilting stores and usually buy some more fabric, just in case!

I was thrilled to find this little quilting shop in downtown Chetwynd. Seams Forever carries a wide variety of quilting fabrics as well as other types of material, notions, buttons, and even sewing machines!

The friendly staff helped me choose some gorgeous fabric and pick out a lovely pattern for my next big project. I'll be back for sure!

From the moment I first saw the rough outline of this carving at the 2006 Chetwynd International Chainsaw Carving Championship, I knew it would always be my favourite.

I have always loved moose and I collect moose figurines at home. When this big guy was finished, and placed downtown, I just had to get a photo with him!

One of the greatest adventures in my life was hiking Mt. Azouzetta in the Pine Pass south of Chetwynd.

The trail is steep and difficult, in places you have to make your own trail as the original trail has washed away. Our reward for our efforts to get up the mountain was well worth it - the view from the top is amazing as you look across mountain ranges in every direction.

The alpine wildflowers were blooming and we saw a few ptarmigan out and about among the rocks near the summit as well!

Since I got my first set of golf clubs for my birthday a few weeks ago, I just can't resist the lure of the two fabulous courses in Chetwynd. One hot and sunny day last week I packed up my clubs, dropped my kids off at their grandma's and headed out for a round at nearby Natural Springs Golf Resort.

Just 15 km from downtown Chetwynd, the course winds across gently rolling fairways and crosses several creeks. Large ponds are home to muskrats and many types of ducks and other birds. The Pine River just behind the course attracts other local animals too - I saw a moose and her calf come down for a drink!

The course is excellent for both beginners and experienced golfers with lots of sand and water hazards to test your skills. The clubhouse is a great place to spend some time relaxing and enjoying a great meal before or after your game. Club and cart rentals are available, but the fairly flat course is a nice one for walking.

There's no need to travel miles to the ocean when you live in Chetwynd and want relax on the beach. Just a 10 km drive from downtown Chetwynd is a beautiful sandy beach along the cool Pine River.

We packed up the kids and a picnic lunch, and off we went to spend the afternoon beside the river.  The kids had a blast tossing rocks into the river and chasing minnows in the shallow pools. We saw a few people trying their luck fishing just upstream from the bridge.

The water was cold, but the sun was hot and the breeze kept the bugs away. What a perfect day!

A favourite way to spend a lazy summer afternoon is checking out local gardens. I can teach my kids about different colors and types of plants while enjoying some beautiful scenery. The flower gardens at the Chetwynd Visitor Centre in downtown Chetwynd, B.C. are a definite must-see. Not only are there several large beds of colourful flowers, but also an ever-changing collection of 7-foot tall chainsaw sculptures!

A lovely paved and gravel walkway complete with benches and a picnic area make this a great place to spend an afternoon. The Visitor Centre staff are always willing to come out and share information about the carvings or take us on a guided tour. If you look closely you might even see one of the Visitor Centre's resident garden gnomes catching some sunshine.
