August 5-6, 2006 we participated in the Canadian National BBQ Championships in Whistler, BC.  Selected as judges for the competition, this had to be one of our most memorable trips to Canada.

Traveling from our home in Libby, MT to Vancouver then to Whistler was an incredible drive.  Then leaving Whistler, we ventured over the mountains and through the valleys to Lillooet, Ashcroft, Kamloops, Kelowna, and finally to Creston where we crossed back into the USA.

Friendly and caring people throughout our trip made this a never to forget adventure.  We eagerly are waiting for August to return for a repeat performance.

Found ourselves getting in a rut with repeated visits to the San Juan Islands, so tried out the Canadian side with great enjoyment (Galiano and Salt Spring Islands). Wonderful opportunities for kayaking, unique B and B's. Highly recommended!

It was 1980.  I was on a cross-Canada train trek (except by bus in places like between Vancouver and Victoria) visiting artist-run galleries in order to better function as manager of a gallery in my hometown.  I was enjoying the day in Vancouver before boarding the train for my return trip East.  It was my 24th birthday!

Almost a month later I was home and found out my grandfather had passed away on my birthday!  He died while happily watching a CFL game on TV.  Somehow, I have always looked at this BC experience as some kind of karmic connection between Ontario and British Columbia and my grandfather and I.  I have yet to return to the West to continue the journey, but I know someday, somehow I will.  Stay tuned: I am!

A great historic site to visit near Prince Rupert. My wife and I came across this site while waiting to board the ferry to the Queen Charlottes.  There is a wonderful little restaurant that serves local dishes and the play put on each day adds much to the history of the place.  As well, visitors can stay overnight in one of the rooms of the original bunkhouse/hotel.  The sunsets are magnificant.

If you're ever in Vancouver with your kids on the third Sunday of any month, you just have to go to Super Sundays at the Vancouver Art Gallery.

On Super Sundays the Vancouver Art Gallery transform the gallery space into a huge interactive, hands-on arts and crafts display. Families, kids in particular, are invited to paint, mould clay, dance, draw, sculpt; pretty much any activity that's art related is available. Each activity is led by one of the gallery staff, and every Super Sunday is themed around the current exhibit. Last time my family went, the exhibit was Emily Carr, and all the activities centered around her life and her work.

All the supplies are provided and very child gets to take home their creations, although the gallery does ask for donations to cover costs. It's a great way to let your kids burn off some energy, and who knows, you might be nurturing the world's next great artist.

From Tofino harbour on the west coast of Vancouver Island, we set of on a 6 hour boat ride to Hot Spring Coves.  Once beyond the picturesque habour of Tofino we were treated to breathtaking views.  We encountered a bald eagle, a bear  catching salmon on the shore, and porpoises cavorting in the water.  The small area off Hot Springs where our boat docked was so welcoming.  It was but a hint of the wonderful 2 hour adventure ahead along the magical hike to the springs.
