Smithers, Accommodation
If you find yourself in Smithers and you are looking for an accommodation, the Stork Nest Inn is a great place to stay. The Inn holds its reputation for being "serious about sleep" and closes its doors at midnight to ensure that the premises is quiet for those that are staying overnight. The Inn is located on Main Street and is within close walking distance to several local businesses and restaurants. There is also a grocery store and convenience store located close to the accommodation.
For more information on this accommodation in Smithers, please refer to the British Columbia Approved Accommodation Guide, or speak to a Visitor Information Counsellor at a BC Visitors Information Center.

New Hazelton, Accommodation
If you find yourself in New Hazelton and looking for an accommodation, there is a small family run business called Robbers Roost Motel. The rooms are very clean and there is room for those that are looking for longer term tenancy, or just a short stay. The prices are reasonable and I recommend the place for families or individuals. It is within close walking distance to the main area of town where there are convenience stores and restaurants, as well as the Hazelton Visitors Information Center. Hazelton is a great place to take a break from the driving and take in the incredible scenery and local attractions.

Prince George, Theatre & Performing Arts

If you find yourself in Prince George and really want to see some theatre, Theatre Northwest is a really great opportunity. I have seen many plays here over the last couple years, and every single time I have left quite pleased as they put on some really amazing shows. They bring in professional actors from all over Canada and act some really amazing plays. Even if you don’t see yourself as a theatre person, I would recommend giving this theatre a shot because I don’t see how you could be disappointed. Time after time they have made me enjoy it and wanting to come back for more. I have checked out their new schedule for this coming year and they have many new plays which I hope to see a few of. Anyone else who may be interested I would definitely make the stop and check them out!

Prince George, Accommodation
Purden Lake Resort is a great stop for those heading along Highway 16 East from Prince George. While it is a resort with campsites, tenting and cabins, it also has a really awesome little café where you can stop and get some food. They have recently completed a large log cabin for their new café, but they still provide the same great food. One of my favourites from stopping here is the homemade pie and ice cream. The pies are so crispy and fresh and the ice cream is amazingly creamy and soft. It’s a great stop for pie no matter which season it is. Of course they also have a great selection of other foods to fill you up and get you on your way as well. I recommend everyone make a stop at Purden Lake Resort on your next trip out east.

Prince George, Theatre & Performing Arts

While one of very few still remaining not only in British Columbia, but in Canada, the Park Drive-In Theatre in Prince George is a historical masterpiece. These old drive-in theatres have long begun to be extinguished across Canada, but Prince George has been one of the few fortunate ones which are still around and in full operation. Viewers watch the movies on a massive 3200 square foot screen while you relax in the comfort of your own vehicle. While watching recently released movies on this giant screen I was able to have a huge selection of food, drinks, snacks and food from the grill in their concession. Definitely some great burgers and poutine! And of course you can’t go to the movies without your large bag of popcorn either! Earlier in the day I was able to play a round of 18-hole mini-golf and take a thrill ride through the go-cart track. I had endless fun and excitement here and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a great afternoon or night out at the movies!

Traveling across Canada you will find all kind of different city mascots, representatives, statues and figures that represent each community along the way. One of the best that is out there must be the one which they have in Prince George. Prince George is represented by a great big wooden mascot named after the city itself as Mr. PG. It has been around for many years in many different forms and done a fair bit of travelling itself. He has actually been in the 1963 Grey Cup parade in Vancouver and used to be able to bend down below power lines. He stands outside the visitor centre in Prince George and the staff are more than willing to share his history with you.
He has been dressed up in many different costumes, waving different flags, and had his face painted for different occasions. He gets all dressed up to celebrate many different holidays and occasions, showing his pride for the city of Prince George. Recently I had seen him when he was dressed up in his KISS costume when the performers were in town.
But really, what more could you ask for as a statue that actually has a song written about it. Not any other community that I can think of has a great big wooden mascot that represents the main industry in the city and has its own personal song written about it. He holds a significant place in the hearts of the citizens of Prince George and represents the forestry industry in all its glory. Perhaps on your travels you will be lucky enough as I was to visit him on my travels.

McBride, Culinary Tours & Schools

Making your way east towards Jasper from Prince George is a little town of McBride which makes for an excellent stop to stretch your legs. In McBride they have a really cool ice cream shack called Crazy Cones. They were closed the first time I went through McBride, but on the way back I was determined to stop there again and I am glad that I did. It was an excellent stop for ice cream, sandwiches, smoothies and milkshakes, and other snacks that I really recommend. Anyone could make the regular stops at gas stations, but this is a really good stop and a much better option just off the highway. You can’t miss the place as it’s brightly coloured exterior makes it easy to find. Make your next stop in McBride at Crazy Cones and you will be really glad that you did.

Dawson Creek, Museums

For anyone making a trip north along the Alaska Highway (Highway 97) to the Yukon or Alaska, must make the stop at the Mile ‘0’ Post in Dawson Creek! At this point it marks the beginning of the Alaska Highway heading north. The United States needed to find a way to get supplies up to Alaska, and since there was no road at that time to get them there, the beginnings of construction took place. Thousands of people were brought in to help construct the highway and the railway system over rough and uncharted terrain.
What I’ve learned is that many people and their families make this trip up to Alaska today because one of their relatives had worked on the highway and had helped build it. This is a really interesting way to see the history that has gone into building the highway and reconnect with their own family heritage.
To gather further knowledge on the history of the Alaska Highway I would recommend everyone also make the stop in at the Alaska Highway House where they have an amazing exhibit on the construction on the highway, video recordings and pictures, and a very detailed history on the people that were involved in its construction.
Anyone making this trip north would really enjoy the information and exhibits that these two locations hold. The construction of the Alaska Highway is as much of a part of the history of British Columbia and the Yukon as it is for Alaska because we would not be connected with the help in constructing this highway either.

Vanderhoof, Parks

Located south of Vanderhoof, Finger Lake Resort is a great wilderness getaway for almost any occasion from weddings, honeymoons, family vacations and reunions. I had a great experience here with a couple of my friends. They have really great cabins available for use there, tenting is available, and RV access as well. Since Finger Lake Resort is the only road access to Finger Lake, you are quite at peace with nature out there and have no worry of any disturbances. They also have lake access for boats, which you can also rent as well, with really great fishing available. While out on the lake we were able to see many loons, some amazing pelicans, hawks, eagles, and while we did not see them, there are apparently moose that make a regular appearance in the shallow marshes of the lake. Also in the same area are some amazing waterfalls. Two of which are Greer Creek Falls and Cheslatta Falls. Hiking into both these falls are quite easy and a great short walk in. If you are going to make it to Finger Lake then you might as well visit both of these waterfalls as well because they are along the way there. They are a great way to spend the afternoon. Great for fishing and a weekend getaway, Finger Lake was well worth the visit. It was a very relaxing trip and I hope to make it back there again very soon.

Prince George, Car / Truck / Motorcycle
A few months ago I was deciding to try a new thing with a few friends of mine that I had never done before – Paintball. Now this is something that I could really keep doing as a regular activity. I went to a place called Urban Combat Paintball in Prince George and had a great time. This is an indoor paintball facility, and it provides a really different experience to the outdoor game. I have now tried both indoor and outdoor games and I’m not sure which one I enjoy more. Urban Combat Paintball provides a great indoor experience, they are developing a outdoor course soon too, and really gets your adrenaline going. The indoor game in played in a much closer proximity to your competitors and really gets your thinking a lot more. You have to use your angles a lot more carefully to avoid getting hit, while also using many different shields and obstacles to block the path of incoming paintballs in your direction. If you want to feel the rush of paintball, then I really recommend heading to Urban Combat Paintball in Prince George and test the indoor game out for yourself.
