The Paralympic spirit is alive in the town of Kimberley, British Columbia.
It started as a dream to create the best Race Training Centre possible for Paralympic Athletes. Kimberley Alpine Resort has a long history of supporting Race Training that dates back to the 60’s and 70’s with athletes like Gerry Sorenson.
Gerry Sorensen Lenihan began skiing at the age of 10 in Kimberley, BC where she was born in 1958. Sorensen was named Canada’s “Top Female Athlete”, Sport B.C.’s “Top Senior”, and “Top Overall Athlete” in 1982. Named #1 in the world for the Downhill Event for the 1982-83 season. In 1984, she won her 4th World Cup victory in 3 years in the Downhill Course at Puy St. Vincent, France.
Gerry set the tone for athletic excellence and both Kimberley’s community and Kimberley Alpine Resort have not looked back.
Continuing with athletic excellence and dedication to the sport, Annie and Jerry Johnston started Canada’s first disabled skiing program and so began the tradition of Kimberley becoming the destination for disabled training and racing. Jerry assumed duties as the President and Executive Director in of the Canadian Association for Disabled Skiing (CADS) in 1976 and received Federal Charter as non-profit organization in 1979.
Now the City of Kimberley and Kimberley Alpine Resort have built an Alpine Training Run and continue their hard work and determination to build a Paralympic Training Centre

My fiancé took me out for dinner last week to the Gypsy at Red. It was an incredible fine dining experience with a menu that will tantalize your palate. I couldn’t believe all the options that looked incredible, although I had to decide I can’t wait to go back and try some other dishes. The ambiance was great at the Gypsy, the warm breeze coming in from the patio and watching the sky brighten with the rising moon all enhanced the evening.

Today I had my first Rossland muffin, from Clancey’s. Everyone had been telling me I had to try it and today I did. It is one of the largest muffins I have ever seen and it is filled with cream cheese! I have visited Clancey’s a few times; it’s a great place to sip a latte. I have noticed these giant warm muffins before but didn’t know if I could handle it. A friend brought me one this morning and waited in anticipation on my first bite and my first experience of this unknown land. I was amazed.
I have noticed during my summer here that Rosslanders’ both work and play hard and this also applies to their muffins. This is more than a muffin, this is a Rossland muffin.
Elevated beauty, unassuming charm and a golden past characterize Rossland. This truly is the best place to live, work and play. Some of the unlimited activities in Rossland include, mountain biking, golfing, hiking, horseback riding, downhill, Nordic and snow cat skiing, snowshoeing and dog sledding. And of course their incredible dining, spas and numerous festivals and events throughout the year are other great reason to visit.
Nestled in the crater of an ancient volcano at an elevation of 1023 meters, Rossland is one of Canada’s highest cities. With an average annual snowfall of 750 centimeters (300”) at Red Mountain, Rossland has a renowned reputation for powder skiing and has produced some of Canada’s best ski racers. Rossland offers mountain bikers and hikers hundreds of kilometers of trails, all radiating from the center of town.
Check out Rossland and be sure to try a muffin!

The fourth annual Little Fest took place a few weekends ago at the Little Slocan Lodge. Performers included Agnostic Mountain Gospel Choir, The Cave Singers, Frazey Ford & Ora Cogan, United Steelworkers of Montreal, The Pasties, Fish & Bird, Widow Maker and Kenny Konrad & Old Blind Crow.
There was an outdoor stage, beverage garden, food concession and free camping. The great music went from noon till 2 am. The atmosphere was so incredible and you could feel it even from walking up the path. The mountain music was drifting through the trees; it was a very unique venue.
Despite the rain, wind and hail the crowd at Little Fest continued to dance and have a good time; nearly 450 people braved the weather and enjoyed all the very talented emerging bands.

I just returned from Prince Rupert, and had a great time! I went on a tour of Pike Island, which has petroglyphs and a longhouse, with Seashore Charters. We ate (and drank!) at Rain Dining Lounge, which was super funky AND had amazing food! I also stayed in a brand new suite at The Crest Hotel, and it was awesome - kitchen with granite countertops, entertainment area, flatscreen, fireplace, king size bed... I didn't want to leave it.

When he rode to the Anahim Lake Stampede in 1977, Dale Dunn and a group of his friends were hosted overnight by the legendary Pan Phillips at his fish camp on the Blackwater River. From 24 June to 14 July 2009, Dale and Yvonne Dunn led a horseback trek from Titetown Lake to Anahim Lake and return. During this trek we had the pleasure of visiting Pan's son Robbie and his wife Linda at the Pan Phillips Fish Camp, which they continue to operate on a year-round basis. Robbie and Linda were extremely gracious hosts who invited us into their home (and main lodge), which is replete with memorabilia extolling the life and times of Pan Phillips. Anyone who has read the numerous books about Pan's life and adventures would relish a visit to the Pan Phillips Fish Camp, as would anyone wishing to avail themselves of the magnificent fishing opportunities afforded by the Blackwater River. The accompanying photo shows (left to right) Linda Phillips, Yvonne Dunn, Robbie Phillips and Dale Dunn with the main lodge in the background.
