Dawson Creek, Beaches & Swimming

I'm not sure if you guys noticed, but there has been a heat wave hanging around B.C. recently. With temperatures hovering around 27-30 degrees for the past couple weeks, we finally decided to beat the heat and head over to the swimming pool.
The Kenn Borek aquatic centre is located in the recently built Encana Multiplex. It's a state of the art facility, featuring an 8 lane, 25m competition pool, and a leisure pool complete with many fountains and a lazy river for the young 'uns. There is also a waterslide, sauna and steam rooms, hot tubs, 1m and 3m diving boards, and a swirl pool.
The pool is well built to accommodate swimmers of all ages and abilities. The leisure pool is shallow enough for most children, and the area is well monitored to assure safety. The competion pool has a lot of toys to play with, which makes it fun for more experienced swimmers who are comfortable in the water. My personal favourite, however, is the waterslide. Truly there is no greater thrill in this world that wooshing down a tube filled with water, with no control of your direction or speed...
..or maybe that's just how I feel about it.

Dawson Creek, Festivals & Events

I come from a family of cars. Where my cousin's '65 mustang convertible is considered just as much a relative as its owner. So the annual Mile '0' Cruisers Summer Cruise is like a big family reunion. The annual auto enthusiast event fills the city of Dawson Creek with vintage cars for a weekend, culminating in a downtown Show & Shine on the Sunday. And this was a year to remember for the Mile '0' Cruisers. The weekend of July 11-12 was marked with decidedly beautiful weather, which helped draw 200 classic rides to line the downtown core.
The Summer Cruise is the largest car show north of Edmonton, and about 70% of the participants come from out of town, with some cars (and their drivers) hailing from as far as Vanderhoof, B.C. The rides themselves ranged from the usual car show fare (mustangs, corvettes, bel-airs) to the unusual (vintage transport trucks, motorbikes, and some things I don't even have a name for). Of course, every car-driver relationship has a story, and the drivers are always more than willing to share. One particularly interesting ride this year was a 1954 Meteor Niagara (pictured above). The car's driver purchased it as his first car in the early 60's, and it was his mode of transportation as he dated his future wife. After a few years, however, the car was parked. This lasted until just this last winter, when it was completely restored. Now, less than 6 months removed from its big makeover, the car managed to place in the top ten rides of the weekend.
The downtown show and shine took place from 8:30-2:30 and along with the cars featured many activities for youngsters, several food stations, local event tents, and some raffles. The day wrapped up with the presentation of the people's choice top ten, as well as the sponsor's favorites around the Mile 0 post.

Dawson Creek, Golf

Hello, my name is Scott Schilds and I am a terrible golfer. After many years of failure, I have grown accustomed to this fact, and have been able to lead a healthy life despite my shortcomings on the links. So you can understand my trepidation as I learned that my first experience with my new co-workers at the DC Visitor Info Center was a trip to the Lone Wolf Golf Club. This was before I realised that this is a club that's about so much more than golf.
This, of coures, isn't to say that the golf facilities aren't incredible. It's a 18 hole, par 72, championship course complete with 86 sand bunkers and a CPGA pro on staff. The course is located in the picturesque Peace River valley, which keeps the winds low, and also allows the opportunity to see many kinds of wildlife along your way, including moose, deer, eagles and elk.
After our collective golfing adventure, me and the other counsellors headed into the licensed clubhouse to experience some of the hospitality offered by the friendly staff. Now, I may not be the next PGA star, but I do know good food. And the full restaurant on site served up some good food. For my money, there is no better day than one spent outdoors, capped off with a delicious meal and a playoff hockey game on TV at a local restaurant, and that is exactly what we were provided by our welcoming hosts at the Lone Wolf Golf Club.
And if it helps, that day held the best golf I'd ever played.
