I've found my new favourite restaurant in Vancouver. Located on the south side of False Creek, east of Granville Island and west of the Cambie Street Bridge, you'll find Stamps Landing. And tucked in a corner of this square on the seawall is Ocean 6 Seventeen Restaurant. It's tiny - probably about 45 seats in total - and faces out onto the water just a few feet away, overlooking a marina filled with sailboats. The menu is fresh, extensive, generous and well-priced. However, I haven't explored it as much as I should, because I've gotten hooked on their Squid dish - lightly coated in cornmeal and served with tomatilla sauce. That and a glass of Smoking Loon Viognier out on the patio, and I'm set!!

I am not a huge fan of oysters, but I’m game to throw one back every now and then - as long as you shove it in a shooter glass full of spicy-something or another with vim and vinegar added in for good measure. That being said, I happened to run into
Rodney’s Oyster House as part of a scavenger hunt yesterday, and I think I may have been instantly converted into one of those obsessed slurpers I keep bumping into.
While I have never been to Cape Cod or Martha’s Vineyard, I would expect Rodney’s would fit in there just swell, with white-washed wood, hand-painted driftwood signs, hanging buoys and …er, hanging around beach-bum-looking-boys.
Here are two tips I picked up for you. 1. Happy hour is from four to six with oysters for a buck a shuck. 2. In the summertime Rodney (I assume he hangs out there too somewhere) opens up a garden patio for picnics -Wednesday through Saturday 11:30 AM to 10:00 PM (weather permitting). Rodney’s is located in
Yaletown,
Vancouver.

I took Susan's advice and did a "
Dine Out" in Vancouver last night. I was staying at the Marriott Residence Inn on Hornby Street by myself and couldn't bear the thought of take-out so braved the stares of a woman eating alone and went down to the hotel restaurant Mi Bar and Grill. It was the first night of Tourism Vancouver's promotional campaign featuring a wide variety of restaurants, set menus and wine parings and as its a very popular promotion, the restaurant had a full list of reservations. The maitre de was very welcoming however, and invited me to sit at the bar and enjoy my dinner. For $15 dollars I had a choice of 2 appetizers, 3 entres and 2 deserts. I chose
Dungeness Crab Cakes, Beef Short Ribs with Black Bean Cake and Corn Salsa, and White and Dark Chocolate Mousse for desert. The meal was delicious, the crab fresh and light, the short ribs, albeit a bit on the fatty side, tender and tasty, and the desert, heavenly! I enjoyed a lovely glass of recommended Penfolds Semillion Chardonnay that was smooth and light, a great addition to my meal. Not only did I have a great meal for a fabulous price, the service at Mi Bar and Grill was tremendous. The staff obviously like working there and the restaurant is small enough to give them time to attend to each and every guest. Hope you get a chance to try some new restaurants and some new dishes over the next few weeks. And if you have to go by yourself, trust me, its much better than take out!

You better read this quick so you can make a few reservations asap!
Dine Out Vancouver is back in town and I have been told that some restaurants are already selling out on key nights. I am desperately trying to get into Cassis on opening night and, since I have had to email my reservation request to the restaurant directly, I am biting my nails waiting for a response. This is worse than waiting for Christmas morning!! If you plan to be in
Vancouver between January 20 and February 4 this is a great way to experience the top restaurants at extremely affordable prices - $15, $25, or $35 per person.

As proud, albeit sleep deprived, new parents, we recognize the fact our priorities need to shift; but it doesn't mean we're dead! We still have the urge to travel. Now though we have to consider our little guy as well. So while a backpacking trip through Belize would be great, I just don't think it's the right trip for our newborn; we definitely need to visit baby-friendly destinations. Which got me thinking about how baby-friendly Vancouver is. We drag the boy everywhere we go, and rarely has that been a problem. Even some of the swankiest Vancouver establishments are gracious and accommodating. And while you might not get the best table in the house, you can still count on having a great experience. A few favourites haunts are
Wazubee's on Commercial Drive;
Subeez on Homer St;
Solly's Bagels on Yukon St;
Stella's on Commercial;
Locus on Main St. and
The Whip on E 6th Ave. The common thread with all of them? Great food, a casual, hip vibe and lots of room for strollers and car seats. But that's just the tip of the iceberg. I honestly can only think if a handful of spots where a baby would be a challenge. And don't forget there are tons of baby-friendly
attractions and activities here too. So if you're thinking about taking a BC vacation, and you've got a cherub in tow, don't sweat it - you'll find us most accommodating.

I recently discovered
the restaurant at the Jericho Sailing Centre when a friend invited me to sailing for the night. It is open for the public and the patio offers spectacular views of English Bay, the North Shore Mountains and the downtown area. It offers no-nonsense, pub-style food at reasonable prices. Nothing beats watching the sunset there while enjoying a cold beer and a veggie burger on a nice summer night. Check out
their website for directions. Or read our information about
Vancouver's beaches.
