While wandering on Cox Bay Beach in Tofino, I came across a sign on the north end of Cox Bay for Pettinger Point/Sunset Point. The trail appeared well-travelled and the sign looked new, so I ventured into the woods to see where it led.
The path was very easy to follow and a large part of it was wooden boardwalk. Thick salal and trees lined the route. Less than ten minutes of walking later, the trail opened up into a grassy area surrounded by chunky black cliffs and rocks. My only company? A batch of black oystercatchers and some seagulls.
The view was fantastic. From the top, I was able to look back towards Cox Bay, Rosie Bay, and Chesterman Beach, as well as out towards the open ocean. Waves smashed against the rocky cliffs, and a few benches were nicely positioned to take in the scenery.
I visited in Pettinger Point in the afternoon, but I’m sure that sunsets from this spot would be spectacular.

It doesn't matter how many times I go out to the west coast of Vancouver Island, I'm always amazed at the raw beauty of our natural wonders. It was even more evident as seen recently through the eyes of our two English guests who while well travelled, seemed totally delighted with everything British Columbia had to offer. Of special interest to one was the old growth forest and the other the expansive and tantalizing beach.
So they are both coming back, one to explore our coastal rainforests and the other to body surf all summer long.

Every year, without fail, we sneak away for a long weekend in December to Tofino. This is our time to wind down before all the hussle and bussle of Christmas descends upon the Lower Mainland. We love to go to Middle Beach Lodge and Crystal Cove. We've already booked for Dec 2007! This will be our 11th year of the winter visit. We always fall in love over and over again with the views of the ocean at our doorstep. If only you could bottle it and take it home.
We're usually in time for "Jingle Bell Rock" which is their late night hristmas shopping celebration and we're finding new shops or restaurants to visit everytime we visit.
Our little Min Schnauzer loves it too because Tofino is dog-friendly!
