I must confess, I have a terrible addiction…to coffee. Before functioning in the morning, I must have at least one cup of liquid gold. I thoroughly love fresh roasted coffee, although I will settle for a quick instant coffee if there is no other option. This summer, a new coffee shop opened up in Fort St. John so I just had to check it out. The Canadian Grind is located downtown inside the local scrapbooking store, Unforgettable Memories. Although a drive through is available to grab a cup of joe and go, I opted for walking in so I could look through the scrapbooking supplies while waiting for my latte to be made. The small, but cozy section of the store surprised me in how large of a selection they have to offer. I decided on a skinny brown sugar latte with half the syrup and extra hot (yes, I know I’m a bit picky). After one sip, I knew that The Canadian Grind was going to be a hot spot I would visit frequently for the rest of the summer. Mmm did it ever taste good! I also liked the fact that they use Salt Spring coffee. Why not support an organic, fair trade, and local BC company? The countless varieties of loose tea also caught my eye, so I just had to purchase a few small bags to take home. The loose tea undoubtedly has much more delicious flavors than a boring old tea bag. If you’re craving a specialty latte, tea, or cold drink, treat yourself to The Canadian Grind.

In my mind, summer isn’t summer without countless barbeques! My favourite place in Fort St. John to buy meat for sizzling on the grill is from The Butcher Block. This past weekend, we gathered to have a big family BBQ, complete with fresh sirloin steaks from none other than the locally owned and operated family meat packaging business in town. Although I am not a huge meat lover, my steak exceeded my expectations. The quality of the meat is only of the many things The Butcher Block has to brag about. I find the prices to be very reasonable and consistent outstanding service. You sure can tell that this is a local business that truly cares about it’s customers. Even though the beef is delicious, The Butcher Block also offers great turkey, chicken, pork, fish, sausages, and cooked meats. My evening ended up being very enjoyable while connecting with all of my family members over a delicious BBQ dinner and a few energized card games on our patio.

Yesterday was definitely one of those order-in kind of nights. After a long day of work, I was starving but it seemed as if my fridge was filled with absolutely nothing that was appealing to me. After one of my co-workers had nothing but praise to offer about her “nacho” pizza that she ordered the night before from Olio’s Pizza, I figured that I would try it out for myself. I decided on the one of the signature pizza’s, the “Olio’s Casa”. I was impressed how quickly it arrived to my door and even more thrilled when I saw the mixture of topping piled high on a fresh in-house made crust. I must say, I haven’t had a pizza this good in a long time. Personally, I believe that the local ingredients that they use in all of their pizzas contribute to the mouth-watering flavours. Although some of the other pizza’s, such as the “Sloppy Joe”, “Frankie’s Chicken”, and the “Donair Pizza”, sound a little too adventurous for my liking, I’m sure I’ll be calling Olil’s again for another great pizza.

Arrived in the morning we stopped at first at the Tourist Info to get the sticker for our BC Parks Booklet. Further we got information for fuel prices and some internet cafes. The handed brochure is great. Loads of useful information in a modern style. We saw a lot of brochures, but this one is one of the best with Salmon Arm and Grand Prairie. Unfortunately Grand Prairie couldn't proof all the nice infos in the brochures. We were totally unhappy there. The better we feel now in the Whole wheat and honey cafe at the city center of FSJ with a Mint Brownie and a small double shoot Latte. Yummie...

Earlier this week I was taken out for dinner at On the Rocks
Neighborhood Pub in
Fort
St. John. When arriving
at the pub I was a bit hesitant but was reminded by my friend to not judge a
book by its cover!
Once inside and browsing the menu I was shocked at the
variety of meals available – from appetizers, wraps, sandwiches, full meals and
a great variety of drinks! I had the chicken souvlaki wrap which consisted fresh
chicken, cheese, tomatoes and tzaziki sauce…mmm my favorite! The Pub also features
dancing on the weekends!

Being in the Peace Region during the summer months away from
home in
Ontario
I thought I would be missing all the eclectic foods. But in
Fort St. John
I was surprised about the variety of ethnic foods available! One of my favorite
places to eat and be reminded of home is Saigon Noodles which features
Vietnamese inspired dishes! My favorite is number 17, curry noodles with
shrimp! Yum yum!

Whenever I go for lunch with a friend, we always hum and haw
about where we should go. There are so many options in town and it makes it
hard to decide. Lately I have been either exploring a new place, or trying out one
of the places I haven’t been to in ages.
One such place is Cosmic Grounds…or should I say Patch Java.
A local coffee enthusiast who roasts his own coffee took over ownership of the
popular local coffee establishment and is making it his own. Although the menu
is still similar, the special was certainly something different for most lunch
places. BBQ ribs, with soup and a scone for under $10 was a fantastic deal, but
I was in the mood for something lighter, I bought a chicken salad wrap with a
bowl of soup. I liked the ordering system of picking up a sandwich/wrap
form and picking exactly what I wanted.
I was also really impressed with the
green consciousness of this place. The sandwich forms were laminated so they
can be re-used and the woman ringing us through encouraged us to use the free
water cooler with washable glasses rather than the requested bottled water that
I am usually forced to purchase. I was grateful that the woman suggested we
enjoy their complimentary water cooler; it saved me several dollars at the same
time saving a plastic bottle.
The wrap was fantastic and very filling, the soup was warm
and tasty and I would certainly recommend that people stop by and see the new
Patch Java.

One scoop or two? Last night my family and I went to Peppermint Patty’s for a delicious hard ice cream dessert. The quaint 50’s diner style has slushies, ice cream and a unique candy store.
Peppermint Pattys’ candy bar is far from average, filled with endless choices of old favourites and hard to find sugary treats. After deliberating the various candies, the next decision is of the ice cream flavour. The flavours range from the traditional chocolate, mint chocolate chip and cookie dough to the original root beer float, wet paint and cinnamon roll.
I chose café latte in a waffle cone and was very impressed. They’re also very generous with their scoop size. One scoop is often more than enough.
Since this charming ice cream parlour is located on 101st Avenue, in downtown Fort St. John, amongst popular downtown shops, it is a great place to stop in for a cool treat on a hot day.

Yee Haw!!! My first country experience was certainly a most memorable one. Being from a large city, I have always associated country dancing with doing a couple of steps to Cotton Eyed Joe, so when several fine gentlemen cowboys asked me to “two-step”, I was completely baffled. What is this “two-step”? Will I completely embarrass myself if I attempt this dance? It wasn’t until a friend of mine pulled me onto the dance floor, at New Frontier in Fort St John, and insisted on teaching me how it was done, that I immediately excelled at this new dance. Well, maybe not excelled, but I certainly did a lot better than I had ever imagined.
After the dancing, I got the opportunity to meet some real cowboys. I had no idea that real cowboys even existed, so you can imagine my excitement. I finally had an epiphany and although I had travelled the world and currently resided in Toronto, I had lived a very sheltered life. I went from believing that cowboys merely existed in those old western films to actually grasping that they are, in fact, real. The New Frontier is a great place for a fun night out and, for a tourist such as myself, it provides a brand new experience.
The festive music, live band, and affordable beverages provided for a great night. When my feet got too tired from the ample two-stepping, there was always a place to sit. This nightclub is additionally a great place to go if you are the type of individual who wants to sit back, relax, and have a drink. The dancing isn’t necessary but is always a great form of entertainment. Earlier in the night, the New Frontier offers a variety of food items on their menu and functions as a bar and grill. It is located at 10320-100th Avenue. I will most certainly be returning there in the near future to have another great experience!

On the eve of June 25th, my boyfriend and I were interested in finding a classy restaurant in Fort St. John to celebrate my 21st Birthday. We decided to return to Uptown Grill, as I had visited and thoroughly enjoyed their delicious food during the “Be a Tourist in Your Own Town Week”. Since it was my Birthday, I had given myself permission to eat anything and everything in sight, so I was more than prepared to enjoy a delicious meal.
We started the evening out by selecting a wine from their wine list. Our waitress was very helpful and informative as she assisted us in selecting a fantastic wine. Afterwards, we decided to split the oriental spring rolls as an appetizer. They were absolutely incredible! We most certainly did not need them however, as our meals included a complimentary salad. I decided to try the teriyaki sirloin as a main course, which proved to be nine ounces of deliciousness! Unfortunately, since I had been such a birthday pig for most of the day, I could barely get through half of it. I am a carnivore and definitely love my meat but for those who are not, Uptown Grill marks all of their vegetarian meals with a small symbol in order to appropriately inform the customer. In addition, they have specials for each day of the week. Each day is a different theme and the daily features include an appetizer, main course, and a dessert.
During the meal, my boyfriend did the usual sneak off to the “bathroom” in order to inform our waitress that it was my birthday. The restaurant was so great that they allowed me to select a dessert and of course, it was on the house.
The general atmosphere in Uptown Grill provides for a relaxing and classy night out in Fort St. John. The outstanding cuisine and friendly service are sure to make the evening a success. I had a fantastic birthday and I will most certainly be returning there soon for our next festive event.
