Powell River, Kayaking & Canoeing

Paddling enthusiasts familiar with British Columbia have likely heard of the Bowron Lake Canoe Circuit, which is phenomenal. A lesser known “great find” is the Powell River Forest Canoe Route.
Much like Bowron, the Powell River route is a 4-5 day adventure involving paddling through a network of lakes with several portages. Bowron is definitely the easier and more developed of the two (hence it’s popularity) so if you’re looking for more challenging portages and fewer people, Powell River may be the route for you.
Tip: Make sure you do your homework and plan ahead because you finish in a different place than where you start, so pre-arranged transportation logistics are necessary. Additionally, you want to be on some lakes early to avoid the afternoon headwinds.

Revelstoke, Accommodation

In August ’06 I stayed at the Coast Hillcrest Hotel, located 3 km outside the centre of Revelstoke, BC. Upon arrival I was impressed with the property, but it was the staff that blew me away. I was a weary traveller who was in need of an exercise fix which I was hoping to squeeze in early the next morning. When I asked what time the fitness centre opens the reply was, “What time would you like it to open?” Now that’s what I call customer service.

On my way from Montana to Stewart, B.C. and back again I stopped in Moricetown to watch the First Nations Peoples fish for salmon in the Bulkley River. The one fellow pictured caught at least 5 in the 30 minutes I watched. I travelled back home on a different route through the Okanagan and Creston. What a beautiful province you live in.

Last December we discovered a great place with tons of snow and winter adventures: Hemlock Valley, just East of Mission, BC. We were amazed by the amount of snow that engulfed our cabins, it was a lot of fun.

My son and I get up to BC every few years for a camping and fishing excursion. On our last trip, we ventured over to Raven Lake for the day. I'm a fairly light sleeper and woke up before the sun came up. when it did, I was treated to something special. With a light mist lifting from the lake, the sunrise was more than spectacular as you can see in the photo. The fishing turned out to be just as rewarding when we found the Trout on the far side along the stumps. Definately a majical day.

To sum up, BC has beautiful, eye-catching landscapes, from the mainland to the Vancouver island, especially the friendly capital Victoria with its marvellous harbour. Vancouver is most remembered for its public transit system which is much more affordable and logical than our province!

On the large circle drive around BC last summer we were lucky to land in a very special place. I do not want to say where that is. Suffice to say it is on the coast. To some one from Colorado it was coming home to a better place where I would not be baked by the sun.
