Bark! Awesome Dogsledding Adventure in Whistler

Spent the weekend up at Whistler and due to an old shoulder injury, couldn't ski. So what else is there to do in Whistler? Well, tons. But I wanted to do something unique (and I wasn't quite brave enough for Ziplining!). So I opted to take a three-hour dogsledding tour in the Soo Valley with a great local outfit called Outdoor Adventures.

First, we were picked up in a mini-van where our driver told us all about Whistler's history and then driven down a logging road partway between Whistler and Pemberton, into the Soo Valley. Even in the moody winter mists, it really was quite beautiful!

We met the dog handlers and guides, and three of cutest racing dog pups (including "Dragon" who was black and white with flourescent light-blue eyes). Then, we were given instructions on how to ride the sleds.

For those a bit nervous (like we were) there was the option of going with one of the guides. What I loved about this is that it meant we got a really funny and interesting running commentary about sledding and the dogs and their personalities. Our dude, "Gordo" was fab.

Sledding's actually really easy if you remember a few of the rules, including the most important: HANG ON! So if you're game for it, you get to drive your own sled or swap round and sit and enjoy the view (but bring sunglasses, the dogs can kick up some snow!)

You have six dogs (ours were Kilo, Peak, Comet, Owl, Sapporo and Canuck) and are with them on a 7km loop (about 2hrs) passing beautiful streams and mountain views along the way.

It's a phenomenal way to spend a day up at Whistler and there are plenty of other places in BC where you can experience this kind of fun.
